Dr. Tim Bilash Announces New Findings Refuting Previous Studies on Hormone Replacement Therapy, Offers Free Consultations Dr. Timothy Bilash, MD's has announced his new research findings that refute a 2002 WHI study that post menopausal women should not take estrogen. For women who have undergone hysterectomy, Dr. Timothy Bilash, a Solana Beach OB/GYN is offering a free personal educational consultation that will help dispel fears about developing cancers and deaths caused by estrogen. According to the article, Yale University researchers "hope the new findings will jolt patients and their physicians into reconsidering the avoidance of estrogen. Dr. Bilash explained, The estimate is that 50,000 deaths over 10 years could have been prevented with estrogen." According to Dr. Bilash, low estrogen levels have been attributed to premature aging, increased risks of heart disease, osteoporosis, and fractures. Lower estrogen levels in menopause contribute to memory loss, skin aging, bone and joint pain, mortality, decreased libido and more. Dr. Bilash explained, There are numerous studies and clinical experience demonstrating the benefits of HRT. The data is there and its based on good scientific research. My website contains a wealth of information and research on HRT. The first WHI study, published in 2002, stated … Continue reading

The Estrogen Debate Continues

Hormone replacement therapy. Those three words sparked no small amount of controversy a decade ago, when the results of one of the largest clinical studies ever mounted showedwomen taking a combination of estrogen and progestin hormones had an increased risk for breast cancer. That study, known as the Womens Health Initiative, convinced women across the country to opt out of taking estrogen. Now, a new study published in theAmerican Journal of Public Healthis raising concern that a lack of estrogen could be deadly. The article reviewed a 10-year history of estrogen avoidance in postmenopausal women. It concluded that a minimum of 18,601 and as many as 96,610 may have died prematurely due to avoidance of estrogen therapy. Now hold on a second before you think about calling your doctor. Dallas Dr. Jane Sadlerexplains there is a serious caveat with the new study: it refers only to women who do not have a uterus. For women who have undergone hysterectomy, this study is reassuring for limited use of estrogen. Beyond age 60 the need for estrogen should be discussed with your doctor. Read her full article here. And stay tuned for an in-depth look at the rise of testosterone replacement therapy in … Continue reading

Withholding estrogen therapy cost tens of thousands of lives

Editor's Choice Academic Journal Main Category: Women's Health / Gynecology Also Included In: Menopause Article Date: 20 Jul 2013 - 0:00 PDT Current ratings for: Withholding estrogen therapy cost tens of thousands of lives 5 (2 votes) Nearly 50,000 women died unnecessarily over the last ten years because estrogen therapy was not given to patients aged 50 to 69 who had undergone a hysterectomy after the 2002 Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study. In 2002, doctors and patients were seriously put off using HRT (hormone replacement therapy) because two trials - HERS and WHI - suggested that one type might raise the risk of cardiovascular problems. Up to that time, HRT had been seen as the savior for women who were in medical menopause; those who had undergone hysterectomy. Dr. Philip Sarrel, emeritus professor in the Departments of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, and Psychiatry, Yale University, and colleagues gathered and analyzed U.S. census data and hysterectomy rates, and estimated how much hormone replacement therapy had declined among female patients aged 50 to 59 between 2002 and 2011. Before 2002, over 90% of these patients had been prescribed estrogen-only therapy for medical menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, as well as to … Continue reading

Estrogen Could Save Lives

Posted: Published on July 21st, 2013

Getty Images / Getty Images For more than a decade, doctors have cautioned women about the risks associated with hormone replacement therapy. But those warnings may have put one group of women at increased risk of dying early, according to the latest study. Researchers at Yale University say that nearly 50,000 women may have died prematurely after they stopped taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat menopause symptoms, following a much-publicized 2002 study that revealed the treatment increased risk of heart disease and breast cancer. The 2002 Womens Health Initiative(WHI) study, a 15 year investigation into the factors that contribute to the health of post menopausal women, was stopped three years early when a preliminary review of the data showed that women taking the combination of estrogen and progestin had a higher rate of breast cancer, heart disease and stroke than women taking a placebo. The results stunned both the public and the medical community, since doctors had been prescribing the hormones not just to treat menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, but for extended periods of time to protect women against heart disease. Almost immediately, doctors and public health officials began shifting women away from such long term use … Continue reading

Hormone replacement debate heats up again

Posted: Published on July 20th, 2013

The news arrived like a hot flash. Results from the first reported leg of the giant Womens Health Initiative study in July, 2002 had an immediate, staggering effect on one of the most established therapies in medicine. The study, involving some 16,000 postmenopausal women across the U.S., showed that those taking standard hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, had a 26 per cent greater risk of developing breast cancers than those given a placebo. It also showed a 41 per cent increase in strokes, a 29 per cent rise in heart attacks and a doubling in the risk of blood clots among the studys hormone replacement cohort. The trials were halted early because their findings were so distressing. Immediately, the use of HRT to combat the hot flashes, restless sleeps, vaginal atrophy and muddled minds that can accompany menopause plummeted around the world. And that, it seemed, would be that. Today, many in the medical community are questioning those seminal and settled health initiative findings and pushing to rehabilitate HRT for the indisputable benefits that the drugs can bestow. From my perspective, the Womens Health Initiative study deserves a really hard look again, says University of Toronto neuroscientist Gillian Einstein. For … Continue reading
