Hormone replacement therapy: British Menopause Society and Women's Health Concern release updated guidelines

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

May 24, 2013 The British Menopause Society and Women's Health Concern have today released updated guidelines on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to provide clarity around the role of HRT, the benefits and the risks. The new guidelines appear in the society's flagship title, Menopause International, published by SAGE. Over the last 11 years, HRT has changed from being branded the "elixir of youth" to being considered extremely risky and only to be used in certain circumstances. Since the publication of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) trial in 2002, and the Million Women study (MWS) in 2003, confusion and controversy has surrounded the use of HRT and the known benefits have often been forgotten. A panel of experts have carefully considered, researched and reanalyzed the WHI and MWS studies alongside conducting further trials and studies, to offer practioners a detailed review of the evidence to help them optimize their clinical decisions, and provide women with more balanced and accurate advice on HRT treatment for menopause. The new HRT recommendations are designed to complement the BMS Observations and Recommendations on menopause. The updated guidelines detail key recommendations targeting access to advice on how women can optimize their menopause transition and beyond, focusing … Continue reading

Addressing menopausal problems

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2013

MENOPAUSE can be a difficult time for women, their partners and families. The range of feelings experienced during this time can be surprisingly debilitating, causing distress, anxiety and pressure on relationships, both at home and work. Taman Desa Medical Centre consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Ong Hean Choon said menopausal women go through medical issues short-term (six months to two years after menopause), medium-term (two to five years) and long-term (five years onwards). Short-term issues are the vasomotor complaints which include hot flushes, sweating, insomnia and emotional mood swings. All these are very distressing and disturbing to menopausal women and they can be irritable as well, said Dr Ong. Medium-term issues comprise psychological, bladder and vaginal problems which are related to sexual problems. They may also have dry, lustreless and dull skin. Meanwhile, long-term issues include cardiovascular diseases, bone problems, osteoporosis and fractures. Women are also prone to colon cancer during this stage of menopause because of low oestrogen levels. They may experience deterioration of brain function which include memory lapses and lack of concentration especially when reading or doing work. Then there are issues like arthritis as well, he adds. LONG-TERM CONCERN Dr Ong, also a menopause consultant, believes … Continue reading

Allegations Against Former Owners Of HRC Medical

Posted: Published on May 18th, 2013

by Jennifer Kraus Consumer Investigator NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Stunning new allegations have been made against the former owners of HRC Medical which once claimed to be the world's largest hormone replacement company. The Tennessee Attorney General sued the company last fall for putting patients' lives in danger after NewsChannel 5 Investigates exposed how some had been overdosed on hormones and experienced serious side effects. The state has accused the owners of HRC of cleaning out the company's bank accounts and leaving nothing for the victims of HRC. In an unsealed amended complaint, the Tennessee Attorney General said brothers Don and Dan Hale not only raided HRC Medical's accounts last year with their families, but also transferred all of its assets to other entities they still controlled and intentionally left the company insolvent. The state said the Hales took almost $2 million from the company -- money the state had hoped to use to compensate patients who suffered serious health complications from HRC's hormone replacement therapy. Former patients, like Roger Wyatt, told NewsChannel 5 Investigates back in November of 2011 how his personal doctor told him, "By their own laboratory standards, you've been severely overdosed with testosterone." According to the state's … Continue reading

Ovarian cancer fall sped up as hormone use dropped

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2013

By Kathryn Doyle NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Ovarian cancer rates in the U.S. began to decline faster in 2002 around the time many older women went off hormone replacement therapy, according to a new study. That year, the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) found that estrogen or estrogen plus progestin hormone therapy, prescribed for the symptoms of menopause, was linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, stroke and heart attack. In a new analysis using census data, researchers found that ovarian cancer rates were falling by about one percent each year before 2002, then dropped by more than two percent per year. The findings don't mean there's a cause-effect relationship between ovarian cancer and the hormone treatments, lead author Hannah Yang of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, told Reuters Health by email. But the association is compelling, she said. "Understanding exposures, such as (hormone therapy), within at-risk populations is useful for overall cancer prevention and control strategies, particularly for tumors that are difficult to treat, such as ovarian cancer," Yang said. She and her colleagues used cancer incidence in North America data combined with census data to compare the yearly percent change in ovarian cancers from 1995 … Continue reading
