Posted: Published on June 14th, 2018

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital is a one-year ACGME-approved program, organized under the directorship of Douglas Drachman, MD. The fellowship functions as an integral component of the subspecialty residency in cardiology and the categorical residency program in internal medicine. During the year of interventional training, fellows are expected to master the techniques involved in coronary intervention, while developing perspective on procedural risk and benefit, patient selection and clinical decision-making in cardiovascular patient care. At the end of the year, fellows should function as independent operators during interventional procedures. The program adheres to the tenets outlined in the ACC COCATS guidelines document and the AHA statement on clinical competency in interventional cardiology. The primary goal of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is to provide comprehensive training in the diagnosis, care and endovascular treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease. Fellows graduating from Mass General's program will be poised to assume positions of leadership in the field of Interventional Cardiology. The fellowship program provides the opportunity to acquire procedural expertise including but not limited to: In additional to learning techniques for percutaneous coronary intervention, fellows will be exposed to non-coronary cardiac interventions and management of peripheral vascular disease. Interventional cardiology is the use of non-surgical procedures to treat cardiac conditions percutaneouslythrough a needle puncturetothe skin. Our interventional cardiologistswill guide a thin flexible tube called a catheter through a vein or artery in your arm or leg to your heart. Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) is an inherited condition in which one part of the heart enlarges. The resulting asymmetry of the heart blocks outflows, so people with the condition are unable to get adequate blood to the rest of their bodies. In the past, the only treatments were with medication; or with medication and surgery, in which the surgeon would cut off the enlarged part of the heart that was blocking outflows. Nowalcohol septal ablation allows interventional cardiologists to inject alcohol into one of the blood vessels that supplies blood to the thickened area. The ablation blocks blood flow to the area, causing it to die and shrink so that the previously blocked blood outflow can return to normal. Percutaneous Coronary Interventionoften involves the placement of coronary stents to open blocked arteries to treat accumulated plaque. Stent procedures are performed through a catheter in the groin or wrist. The heart is protected in the chest wall by a lining (pericardium) … Continue reading

The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at East Carolina University offers a 12 month ACGME accredited fellowship program in Interventional Cardiology for those physicians who have completed a 3 year internal medicine residency and a 3 year cardiology fellowship. Our program provides training in all aspects of interventional cardiology including ICE, IVUS and Flow wire evaluations; PCI (including post IV lysis for STEMI); Angiojet and other aspiration thrombectomy modalities; Rotablator; Peripheral vascular interventions (including occasional venous PTA/stent, 4-vessel cerebral arteriography); Endomyocardial biopsies; Transseptal puncture; Complex PFO and ASD closure; Balloon valvuloplasty for AV or MV stenosis; VSD closure; Alcohol septal ablation for HOCM; and coronary aneurysm coiling. Our average interventional volume is 750 coronary interventions per year of which, 300 are performed via radial approach. We have three interventional faculty members with full time academic appointments who are dedicated to teaching. Research opportunities are plentiful including collaborative work with basic scientists. The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at East Carolina University is an exciting place to learn and grow.
