First-ever Maryland Cares event focuses on student-athlete mental health – Testudo Times

One of the Maryland volleyball teams former competitors returned to the Xfinity Center Monday night, but this time, she came as an ally. Recent University of Southern California graduate Victoria Garrick invited Maryland student-athletes to invest in their minds by removing the stigma around mental health and seeking professional help to deal with the pressures and anxieties that accompany playing a collegiate sport. Revisiting the court reminded Garrick of how far she has come in her mental health journey, which she now talks about on her podcast, RealPod, and through her nonprofit, The Hidden Opponent. Nigeria has been urged to end all forms of abuse in state-run mental health institutions as well as religious healing centres. In a report published on Monday Human Rights Watch (HRW) said thousands of Nigerians with mental health conditions face prolonged detention, chaining, physical and sexual violence or forced treatment, including electroshock therapy. The estimate, published as a peer-reviewed Perspective in the journal Nature Communications, takes into account the economic cost of dealing with poor mental health, including treatment, care, reduced workplace productivity and antisocial behaviour.
