E/R decentralise ART treatment centres

Posted: Published on April 13th, 2014

Health News of Sunday, 13 April 2014 Source: GNA To achieve the desired results in the Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, the Eastern Region has decentralised the treatment and care of pregnant women to make it easier and convenient for them to receive the needed care at all health posts running ante-natal clinics. Ms. Golda Asante, the Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) for the Eastern Region said the move was to offer one stop intervention where pregnant women who tested HIV positive would not be burdened with going from one facility to the other to satisfy the conditions for the administration of Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART). The practice had been that, pregnant women who tested HIV positive at ante-natal clinics were referred to other hospitals to do further test to confirm the results and also to access their CD4 count. The practice entailed a lot of movement which has been identified as stressful to pregnant women hence the decentralization where pregnant women would get all their requirement at the ante-natal clinic. Speaking at a graduation ceremony of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programme in Koforidua, Ms. Asante observed that, most pregnant women who test HIV … Continue reading

MS Society holds 6th Family Day

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2014

12 April 2014| last updated at 11:32PM SUBANG JAYA: MULTIPLE Sclerosis (MS) Society members recently enjoyed a jovial gathering on the society's annual Family Day, now in its sixth year. About 80 patients and their families from the Klang Valley attended a talk by experts, including Sunway University's clinical psychologist professor Nigel Marsh, on the medical condition at Sunway University. Society president Amanda Lopez said it was the main agenda to create public awareness of the rare disease, which affects two out of 100,000 people. "The main problem that MS patients face is the high cost of treatment. "Some of the drugs cost about RM3,000 a month and some can go from RM6,500 to RM10,000 a month," she said. She said the society was organising the Multiple Sclerosis Walk and a membership recruitment drive on June 1, in conjunction with Multiple Sclerosis World Day on May 28. "We hope that the public can learn about the disease through the event, and NGOs (non-governmental organisations) will come forward to lend a helping hand to our society members." Former president of the society, Padma Panikker, said MS was a chronic disease. "There is no cure for this disease, but there is hope." … Continue reading

Cromwell vs. Leon's Decision Released

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2014

A high-profile complaint of workplace discrimination has been validated by an independent board of inquiry. A Nova Scotia Human Rights Board of Inquiry released its decision in the Garnetta Cromwell v. Leon's Furniture Limited case Tuesday, April 8. Board chair Kathryn Raymond's 73-page decision confirms that Ms. Cromwell experienced racial discrimination while working as a sales associate at a Leon's in Dartmouth. The board found that Ms. Cromwell, an African Nova Scotian, had a number of experiences of differential treatment. Ms. Cromwell faced ongoing discipline for workplace infractions at Leon's, which was termed "excessive" by the board. Management discouraged Ms. Cromwell from applying for management positions and she was subjected to teasing and other comments that were racially discriminatory. There were 10 incidents found to be racial harassment. "I feel that justice has been done," said Ms. Cromwell. "The treatment I experienced was dehumanizing and caused me great personal and professional loss. I feel validated and proud of the fact that I spoke up about what I felt was racial discrimination, a problem that remains far too common in workplaces and communities in Nova Scotia." The board ordered Leon's to pay Ms. Cromwell $8,000 in general damages within 30 days. … Continue reading

Adams not barred from seeking nomination, but party still investigating

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2014

Beleaguered Conservative MP Eve Adams has been admonished by party brass for her conduct in a controversial nomination battle, but has not been disqualified from seeking the prize. Ms. Adams had faced the risk of being barred from seeking the nomination in a suburban Toronto riding after Stephen Harper was presented with accusations that she had been granted unfair advantages in this race, had interfered with the districts election planning, and verbally abused party members. Instead, sources say, the Conservative National Council reprimanded her with regard to her treatment of local Tory workers. The National Council approved letters in a Wednesday night meeting that are being sent to Ms. Adams and a riding official who had complained about how she pursued the nomination in a suburban Toronto riding, sources say. The council is, however, still investigating and has asked for a financial accounting of how much Ms. Adams has spent on the nomination race and what has been donated so far. It wants to see how close she is to spending limits for the nomination campaign. The Tory MP has fared better than fianc Dimitri Soudas, a former key aide to Stephen Harper who vacated a top Conservative Party post … Continue reading

Opiate addiction crosses all sectors, Mass. Senate panel is told

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2014

WEBSTER State Sen. Jennifer L. Flanagan, D-Leominster, has traveled the state over the last few weeks hearing people talk about addiction. She intends to file a budget request by the end of the month to fund prevention and treatment. Ms. Flanagan, who chairs the Senate Special Committee on Drug Abuse and Treatment Options, has heard recurring themes: Prescription painkillers such as Vicodin and Percocet are prescribed too freely after minor procedures such as wisdom teeth extractions; there aren't enough treatment beds available; and opioid pills and heroin are deadlier and reaching a younger population than ever before. On Tuesday, Ms. Flanagan was at Webster Town Hall at a listening session hosted by state Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge. The hearing was attended largely by public safety officials from southern Worcester County towns. Ms. Flanagan said afterward that she heard more from this session's participants about emergency medical services, schools and the entire spectrum dealing with addiction. And she hoped that legislative remedies could target money to small towns that lacked extensive school or community resources or transportation for people to get to treatment. Judge Timothy M. Bibaud spoke of one area that will distinguish the region soon a drug court … Continue reading

Picture: Sahlan Hayes When it came time for Leeallison Downie to give evidence to the royal commission into child abuse, she was asked if she wanted compensation. Ms Downie was insulted. What she wanted was to ensure the treatment 30,000 sick, orphaned and ''stolen'' children experienced at the Renwick State Ward Home in Mittagong over 100 years was never forgotten - so it did not happen again. The commission has recommended police prosecute former Renwick staff. But Ms Downie has been left reeling by the O'Farrell government's abandonment of a promise made by Family and Community Services Minister Pru Goward to preserve the institution as a children's museum and youth centre. Instead, the government wants to sell the site to the highest bidder, as Landcom subdivides nearby land for housing. The proposal for the museum, to be run by former residents, had the backing of the local council and historians, who had collected hundreds of photographs and stories.
