Woman of influence: Peta Credlin and Tony Abbott in Brisbane, shortly before the Coalition's 2013 federal election campaign launch. Photo: Alex Ellinghausen Tony Abbott had been prime minister for seven weeks when he visited the Australian military base at Tarin Kowt last October. On his way home, in a relaxed and expansive mood, he fraternised with journalists at the back of the RAAF Boeing-737. With him was his chief of staff, Peta Credlin. "We were having a couple of beers and a chat about the trip to Afghanistan," says Seven Network political editor Mark Riley, "and he made a couple of remarks that she thought were just a little bit out of school." How did Credlin signal to Abbott that he should watch his words? "She gave him a swift kick in the shin." Riley pauses. "It was done with good humour. But for us, it was a really interesting insight into their relationship." Credlin, 43, is the most discussed woman in Canberra, and probably the most powerful. She heads the prime minister's office, effectively the command centre of the Liberal-National Coalition government, and is widely believed to have more influence over the way the country is run than most … Continue reading

Rare, But Serious, Side Effect Reported With One MS Drug

Posted: Published on April 4th, 2014

By Serena Gordon HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, April 2, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- A handful of people taking a medication called Rebif to treat multiple sclerosis have developed a serious condition that causes blood clots to form in small blood vessels throughout the body. In a letter in the March 27 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, Scottish researchers reported that they found an unexpectedly high number of cases of "thrombotic microangiopathy" in people taking Rebif who suddenly developed severe high blood pressure. The condition is a combination of the clotting disorders hemolytic-uremic syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (HUS/TTP). The two disorders often occur together. In HUS, the red blood cells are destroyed, and the debris from that destruction clumps together and clots. Those numerous blood clots cause TTP, which occurs when small blood vessels throughout the body become blocked with blood clots, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The clotting condition is a recognized complication of using Rebif, which is one of the brand names for the drug interferon beta 1-alpha, said study senior author Siddharthan Chandran, a professor of neurology at the University of Edinburgh. In fact, British regulatory authorities issued a drug-safety update last … Continue reading

Textured insoles could be a positive step for people with MS

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2014

University of Queensland research is investigating the effects textured shoe insoles have on walking problems associated with multiple sclerosis. A $120,000 Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Research Australia grant will enable UQ School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences physiotherapy lecturer Dr Anna Hatton to examine the potential of an inexpensive insole to improve the mobility of people with MS. Dr Hatton said many people with MS had problems with walking, which made day-to-day activities difficult and often led to falls. She said walking problems in MS could result from a combination of typical symptoms related to muscles, nerves and senses. The key to improving mobility is to use a range of different treatment techniques which address each of these symptoms, she said. Improving walking ability is of primary importance to maintaining health, independence and quality of life for people living with MS. Dr Hatton and her international research team (spanning Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom) will investigate whether a specially designed insole which enhances sensory information at the feet could boost the walking ability of people affected by MS. They will analyse how about 180 people with MS walk over different surfaces after wearing the insoles for three months. We … Continue reading

Is 'conscious uncoupling' a better way to divorce?

Posted: Published on March 30th, 2014

Sandwiched between posts on mid-century modern recycled plastic side tables and the best sugar wax treatment in San Francisco, Gwyneth Paltrow dropped the news of her marital separation last week on her lifestyle website, Goop. Ms. Paltrow, known as much for promoting juice cleanses as her Best Actress Oscar, characterized the end of her marriage to the British rock star Chris Martin as a "conscious uncoupling" -- a term that drew more than a few eye rolls. But what some see as pretension, others see as practicality. And marriage experts believe she might be onto something. "I'll admit that given it was Gwyneth Paltrow, my first instinct was snarky," said Deesha Philyaw of Forest Hills, co-author of "Co-Parenting 101" with her ex-husband, Michael Thomas. "But conscious uncoupling is a real thing. It's an approach to separation and divorce that's really child-friendly." Ms. Paltrow and Mr. Martin have two children, Apple, 9, and Moses, 7, and are reportedly taking a post-separation family vacation on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. In her blog post titled "Conscious Uncoupling," Ms. Paltrow included a lengthy essay by one of her mentors, Habib Sadeghi, and his wife, Sherry Sami, defining conscious uncoupling. The term … Continue reading
