St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) December 16, 2013 Ms. Katie Thompson, LPC, NCC of Castlewood Treatment Center was a featured expert on Afternoons on 11 recently, talking about the topic of emotional eating. Ms. Thompson spoke with KPLR's April Simpson about the triggers for emotional eating, the problems associated with it, and the way to overcome it. Emotional eating affects individuals of any age, race, or background. Stress, anxiety or other forms of emotional turmoil often trigger it. Ms. Thompson said it is all about trying to gain control in one's life. "People feel like they can control food," said Ms. Thompson. "They feel like they can put the emotions that they can't work out in their relationships onto food, and that it will then be something they can control. Unfortunately, that is a myth." Ms. Thompson went on to say that eating causes a chemical change in the brain to occur. This give the person a few moments of comfort, but that good feeling doesn't last. What is multiple sclerosis? Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease where patches of inflammation occur in parts of the brain and/or spinal cord. This can cause damage to parts of the brain and lead to various symptoms (described below). Many thousands of nerve fibres transmit tiny electrical impulses (messages) between different parts of the brain and spinal cord. Each nerve fibre in the brain and spinal cord is surrounded by a protective sheath made from a substance called myelin. The myelin sheath acts like the insulation around an electrical wire, and is needed for the electrical impulses to travel correctly along the nerve fibre. Nerves are made up from many nerve fibres. Nerves come out of the brain and spinal cord and take messages to and from muscles, the skin, body organs and tissues. MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease. This means that cells of the immune system, which normally attack bacteria, viruses, etc, attack part of the body. When the disease is active, parts of the immune system, mainly cells called T cells, attack the myelin sheath which surrounds the nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord. Genzyme said Friday that the regulatory agency Health Canada signed off on its Lemtrada therapy as a treatment for adults with relapsing remitting MS who did not respond to drugs already on the market north of the border. More than 2.3 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with MS, a disease of the central nervous system, including about 100,000 in Canada. Executives at Genzyme, owned by French drug maker Sanofi SA, are expecting a Food and Drug Administration ruling on Lemtrada by Dec. 27. The drug, which figured prominently in Sanofis negotiations to acquire Genzyme in 2011, was approved by European Union regulators in September, boosting to 30 the number of countries where patients have access to the therapy. But its prospects for sale in the United States, the worlds largest market for prescription medicines, are far from certain after an FDA advisory committee meeting last month. Multiple sclerosis (MS), also known as disseminated sclerosis or encephalomyelitis disseminata, is an inflammatory disease in which the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged. This damage disrupts the ability of parts of the nervous system to communicate, resulting in a wide range of signs and symptoms,[1][2] including physical, mental,[2] and sometimes psychiatric problems.[3] MS takes several forms, with new symptoms either occurring in isolated attacks (relapsing forms) or building up over time (progressive forms).[4] Between attacks, symptoms may go away completely; however, permanent neurological problems often occur, especially as the disease advances.[4] While the cause is not clear, the underlying mechanism is thought to be either destruction by the immune system or failure of the myelin-producing cells.[5] Proposed causes for this include genetics and environmental factors such as infections.[2][6] MS is usually diagnosed based on the presenting signs and symptoms and the results of supporting medical tests.
