SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- It's a tough pill to swallow when you're hit with a hefty prescription drug bill. So it's no many people go online for relief. Cathy Pitts says her mom and dad buy their arthritis medication through online pharmacies to save cash and time. "They're not having to go to the hospitals pharmacy and being told no I'm sorry we don't have that you're going to have to come baCk. They actually have it," said Cathy. But a Google search warns many of these "sites might be compromised." And when people fall for a bogus online pharmacy, they can not only end up with fake pills, but be victim to a host of scams. "When one person picks up on your information they're going to sell that list to somebody else and that somebody else is going to do what they can do to make money and this is where the scam comes from," said Pharmacist Tom Armstrong at Smith's Drugs in Spartanburg. He says that's how online pharmacy users are getting targeted and some tricked into thinking they owe fines for buying medicine online. June 23, 2008 Lightning strikes from a storm system that came through Northern California this weekend have sparked fires in several counties, spreading firefighting resources thin. According to sources at the Susanville Interagency Fire Center, crews and resources are scattered in and around the north state, including Lassen, Plumas, Tehama, Modoc, Shasta, Trinity, Mendocino, Santa Clara and Humboldt counties, to name a few. SIFC manager Craig Kincaid said people can expect to see smoke in the air for awhile, as it is coming from not just one, but many fires in the state. He also recommended that people should try to avoid the smoke as much as possible, either by staying indoors or avoiding strenuous exercise. Lassen Public Health Officer Dr. Kenneth Korver said it was especially important for people with health issues to remain indoors. Probably a good idea for people with serious illnesses, like heart and lung problems, not to get out too much, Korver said. They should stay inside as best they can before it clears. (On my old plan, I was able to receive a four-month supply for just an $8 co-payment at my neighborhood pharmacy.) I was heartened to learn from my insurance provider that as of January, Ill no longer have to pay anything out of pocket when I pick up my monthly supply, thanks to a newly-implemented provision in the federal health care law. In the meantime, I can get my prescription for half-price if I use an online pharmacy, my insurance provider told me. That sounds fine in theory but the US Food and Drug Administration has been firing off a series of press releases warning consumers to stay away from illegitimate online pharmacies, many of which operate in foreign countries. The agency announced on Thursday that it was taking action against more than 4,100 Internet pharmacies that illegally sell potentially dangerous, unapproved drugs to consumers. Por MANUEL ERNESTO RIVERA SAN JUAN (AP) Nueve empleados de American Airlines fueron arrestados el martes por supuestamente estar vinculados a una organizacin que logr enviar de Puerto Rico a Estados Unidos 9,000 kilogramos de cocana por los pasados diez aos. Segn las autoridades federales, la organizacin creada en 1999 estaba compuesta por 23 personas, 14 de las cuales no laboraban en el aeropuerto y se dedicaban a empacar y entregar las maletas con la droga a los empleados de la aerolnea. Rosaida Melndez, una de las fiscales a cargo de la investigacin, indic que el supuesto cabecilla de la organizacin, Wilfredo Rodrguez Rosado, trabajaba a tiempo parcial envolviendo maletas con plstico en el rea de carga del aeropuerto y fue quien reclut a los otros ocho empleados de la aerolnea, quienes reciban los contenedores con el equipaje lleno de la droga que se envi a las ciudades de Orlando, Miami y Nueva Jersey en Estados Unidos.
