Global Kinetics Corporation and Parkinson’s Foundation Announce First Patient Enrolled in APPRISE – PR Newswire (press release)
Posted: Published on May 31st, 2017
The APPRISE study is part of the Parkinson's Foundation Parkinson's Outcomes Project. Data from the study will be used to build evidence that supports GKC's strategy to achieve reimbursement for US payers. "Our goal with the Parkinson's Outcomes Project is to identify clinical practices that make a real difference to patient outcomes," said Peter Schmidt, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Mission Officer, Parkinson's Foundation. The PKG system is the first digital health technology to provide a continuous and objective measurement of Parkinson's symptoms. This objective data, captured by the PKG-Watch over seven days, is combined with GKC's proprietary analysis, to produce detailed reports that allow treating clinicians to accurately monitor Parkinson's symptoms in relation to factors such as medication dose and timing, sleep and exercise. Dr. Rajesh Pahwa, Principal Investigator at Kansas University Medical Center, the site of the first enrolled patient, said, "As a Parkinson's Foundation Center of Excellence, we are excited to be part of the first US randomized study evaluating the use of the PKG in the Parkinson's disease population. In our clinic, using the PKG has helped us to better understand patients' motor states during the day and allows us to better plan their treatment. … Continue reading

Parkinson’s Disease Forecast and Market Analysis to 2035 – Market is Dominated by Generics – GlobeNewswire (press release)
Posted: Published on May 30th, 2017
May 30, 2017 04:33 ET | Source: Research and Markets Dublin, May 30, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Parkinson's Disease Forecast and Market Analysis to 2035" report to their offering. Sizable pipeline characterized by both high growth and attrition Parkinson's disease is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability. Patients also experience significant non-motor symptoms including changes in cognition and mood, sleep disturbances, and autonomic dysfunction. The condition is caused by the degeneration of dopamine-producing cells of the substantia nigra. Parkinson's disease is incurable, but non-fatal, resulting in poor quality of life and increasing disability as the disease progresses. Studies classify Parkinson's disease as the second most common neurologic disease following Alzheimer's disease, and it is expected to cause an increasing social and economic burden as populations age. Recent events and opinion Parkinson's disease is predominantly treated with longstanding and mature therapies such as levodopa and the dopamine agonists, pramipexole and ropinirole. The market is therefore dominated by generics, with Teva's Azilect (rasagiline) being the last lucrative drug indicated for all Parkinson's disease patients. Drug developers have responded by introducing new treatment … Continue reading

Antibiotic may protect brain cells against Parkinson’s disease: Study – Bel Marra Health
Posted: Published on May 24th, 2017
Home Health News Antibiotic may protect brain cells against Parkinsons disease: Study It is easy to recognize someone with Parkinsons disease. They often have a noticeable tremor, a shuffling gait, and move very slowly. Parkinsons is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects nearly one million Americans. The older demographic typically has Parkinsons, with the average age of developing being 60.The disease has no cure, but there are treatments with the goal of controlling symptoms as much as possible. New research has introduced another treatment option that comes from a widely used antibiotic commonly used to fight bacterial infection. Parkinsons is thought to develop in response to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Certain neurons in the brain responsible for the production of dopamine gradually break down and die. This results in several changes in the brain, including the presence of Lewy bodies and alpha-synuclein found in Lewy bodies. According to researchers, doxycycline helps reduce the toxicity of alpha-synuclein. This discovery actually occurred many years ago and by accident no less. A previous alternative treatment to Parkinsons was being tested on mice models, and the mice remained healthy with it. However, the mice were accidentally fedchow containing … Continue reading

Treatment for Parkinson’s might work for Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s too: Study – Firstpost
Posted: Published on May 24th, 2017
New York: An effective treatment for Parkinson's disease might also work for Alzheimer's and Huntington's diseases too as researchers have found that abnormal proteins found in these neurodegenerative diseases all share a similar ability to cause damage when they invade brain cells. The finding potentially could explain the mechanism by which Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's and other neurodegenerative diseases spread within the brain and disrupt normal brain functions. Representational image. Getty Images "A possible therapy would involve boosting a brain cell's ability to degrade a clump of proteins and damaged vesicles," said study senior author Edward Campbell from Loyola University Chicago. "If we could do this in one disease, it's a good bet the therapy would be effective in the other two diseases," Campbell said. Neurodegenerative diseases are caused by the death of neurons and other cells in the brain, with different diseases affecting different regions of the brain. Alzheimer's destroys memory, while Parkinson's and Huntington's affect movement. All three diseases are progressive, debilitating and incurable. Previous research has suggested that in all three diseases, proteins that are folded abnormally form clumps inside brain cells. These clumps spread from cell to cell, eventually leading to cell deaths. Different proteins are implicated … Continue reading

Walterboro man has new lease on life after new Parkinson’s treatment | News | The Press and Standard – Walterboro Live
Posted: Published on May 18th, 2017
by The Press and Standard | May 18, 2017 5:00 pm Last Updated: May 17, 2017 at 12:49 pm Vic Still is wired literally. The 62-year-old Walterboro man recently had a brain pacemaker implanted to help control his symptoms of Parkinsons disease. The procedure involves implanting a stimulator in his chest, which is attached to an electrode in his brain. A handheld programmer controls the current to the electrode, which stimulates the thalamus, which produces dopamine, serotonin and endorphins, Still said. Still was diagnosed with Parkinsons eight years ago, shortly after moving back to Walterboro (where he grew up) from Charleston, where he was in sales with William Scotsman modular buildings in Summerville for 20 years. Parkinsons interferes with the ability to move, talk and has other neurologic symptoms. Its awful not to be able to move and thats what it is, a movement disorder, and its depressing severely depressing, the former runner said. Before committing to the procedure, Still asked his father, Ryan Still, for his opinion. He told him, Youve got to do it. You can hardly move. Dad was right. So far, Stills results have been very positive. Before the implant, he was taking 20-23 pills a … Continue reading

Parkinson’s effects battled in boxing program at NYIT – Newsday

Who hasnt dabbled in a bit of self-diagnosis and treatment to cure what ails us? Have a headache? Take some aspirin and lie down. Feeling queasy and lightheaded? Sip some ginger ale, nibble on crackers and lie down. Battling Parkinsons and losing muscle strength and mobility? Dont lie down. Take up boxing, minus the body blows. Thats what Rosilind Drukker did, after convincing her board-certified neurologist to take a certification program to bring the Rock Steady program to New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury. I lost my handwriting when I was first diagnosed, said Drukker, 61, who lives in Dix Hills and learned she had the degenerative disease in 2010. About a year or two later, movement became very difficult. That is what Rock Steady has helped me with. Its helped me move a lot quicker and without the terrible aches. Rock Steady is a noncontact boxing program founded by former Indiana prosecutor Scott Newman after he was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2006. The organization became a national phenomenon over time, and patients and doctors alike took interest in the program. Exercise plays a fundamental role in the treatment of Parkinsons, a neurodegenerative disease that erodes parts of … Continue reading

TAKE AN ACTIVE APPROACH TO PARKINSON’S For Your Health – The Waynedale News

Parkinsons disease (PD) is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. In Parkinsons disease, certain nerve cells (neurons) in the brain gradually break down or die. Over one million people in the U.S. are living with PD with males being affected 1.5 times more than females. There is a higher prevalence in Caucasians and the incidence increases with age, with most new cases being diagnosed over the age of 60. Even further, it occurs in 1 in 20 persons over the age of 80. Certain risk factors include family history and prolonged exposure to toxins such as herbicides or pesticides. Many of the symptoms are due to a loss of neurons that produce a chemical messenger in your brain called dopamine. When dopamine levels decrease, it causes abnormal brain activity, leading to signs of Parkinsons disease. PD has no cure, but the symptoms can be managed. The four cardinal signs of PD are resting tremor, bradykinesia (slow movement), rigidity and postural instability. Common presentation of Parkinsons include, flexed forward posture, mask-like face, quiet, fast, monotonous speech, small handwriting, shuffling gait. In addition to the outward physical signs of Parkinsons there can also be associated sensory effects such … Continue reading
