DENVER - Some letters arriving from Japanese-American internment camps during World War II were very specific, asking for a certain brand of bath powder, cold cream or cough drops but only the red ones. Others were just desperate for anything from the outside world. "Send me anything," one letter said from a California camp on April 19, 1943. The letters, discovered recently during renovations at a former Denver pharmacy owned by Japanese-Americans, provide a glimpse into life in some of the 10 camps where 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry, including U.S. citizens, from the West Coast were forced to live during the war. They were written in English and in Japanese, expressing the kinds of mundane needs and wants of everyday life, such as medicine as well as condoms, cosmetics and candy. About 250 letters and postcards, along with war-time advertisements and catalogues, came tumbling out of the wall at a historic brick building on the outskirts of downtown. The reason they were in the wall and how they got there are a mystery, particularly because other documents were out in the open. NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) -- The Rhode Island Department of Health has ordered a Saunderstown pharmacy, it said was illegally compounding and distributing medication, to immediately stop the practice. However, the owner insists it's nothing more than a paperwork issue. HEALTH officials announced Tuesday it issued sanctions against Bayview Pharmacy, located on Tower Hill Rd. in North Kingstown, citing illegal compounding operations and health violations found during a Sept. 7 inspection and a subsequent Nov. 13 follow-up. The agency said the pharmacy is only licensed to compound, or combine, medications prescribed by licensed prescribers for specific patients. However, inspectors said records show Bayview had been operating as an unlicensed manufacturer and distributor of sterile injectable medications to both Rhode Island residents and out-of-state customers, located as far away as Illinois. Other violations cited include: While it must immediately stop compounding sterile injectables in its clean room, Bayview Pharmacy will be permitted to continue operations covered by its retail pharmacy license. Pharmacy owner Ryan Dyer told Eyewitness News he believes the Health Department is blowing things out of proportion, saying it boils down to missing paperwork. BOSTON (Reuters) - A federal judge on Wednesday denied a motion to freeze the assets of the owners of the compounding pharmacy at the heart of the deadly U.S. meningitis outbreak, but said the company may not make extraordinary cash transfers or pay dividends or bonuses to the pharmacy's owners. Judge Dennis Saylor, of U.S. District Court in Boston, ordered an attachment of $5 million for each of the two plaintiffs who had moved for a preliminary injunction and prejudgment attachment restraining the assets of the Framingham, Massachusetts-based New England Compounding Center. An attachment represents a preliminary seizure of property pending a final judgment in a case. The plaintiffs, Michele Erkan and Robert Cole, who have filed a lawsuit against NECC, had also sought to freeze the assets of NECC-affiliated companies Medical Sales Management Inc and Ameridose LLC and six individual directors, shareholders and employees, up to $461 million. These included Barry Cadden, NECC's co-owner and chief pharmacist; his brother-in-law Gregory Conigliaro, who is also an NECC co-owner; and other members of the Conigliaro family who are principals of the companies. SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) The state Health Department has ordered a South Kingstown pharmacy to stop what it says is the illegal manufacturing and distribution of medications. The department accused Bayview Pharmacy of acting as an unlicensed manufacturer and distributor of sterile injectable medications for individuals within and outside Rhode Island, including practitioners in Illinois and Indiana. A Nov. 16 compliance order made public Tuesday said that Board of Pharmacy inspectors had found, during an initial inspection in September and a return visit last week, that Bayview has been using compounding powders from a manufacturer not licensed in Rhode Island. On at least two occasions, a pharmacist had used expired powders. The facility also had in stock powder from a prescriber who was not authorized to provide it, the order said. The order said the pharmacy could not produce records and test results relating to the sterility and cleanliness of its compounding room. During the Sept. 7 inspection, state officials found pet food, bowls and bedding near the compounding area. The pharmacy is allowed to continue to lawfully dispense medications under its retail pharmacy license.
