Hearing delayed in Bauder Pharmacy missing-drugs case
Posted: Published on June 26th, 2012
A state hearing has been delayed on allegations of a massive shortage of narcotics at a landmark Des Moines pharmacy. The Iowa Board of Pharmacy had been scheduled to hear evidence today in the case of Bauder Pharmacy. The hearing has been rescheduled for Aug. 28 to give both sides more time to prepare, said George LaMarca, attorney for the pharmacy and owner Mark Graziano. The pharmacy board last month filed administrative charges against Graziano and the pharmacy, located at 3802 Ingersoll Ave., in connection with more than 700,000 pain pills that the board said had gone missing. LaMarca said Graziano and other staff members are cooperating with the investigation, and some of the issues have been resolved. While the matter is pending, the store remains open but is not allowed to dispense certain types of addictive drugs, including narcotic painkillers. LaMarca said his client has not decided whether to ask that the state hearing be closed to the public. No criminal charges have been filed in the matter. LaMarca said other parties had inquired about possibly purchasing the century-old store even before the controversy erupted last month. He said such inquiries have continued in recent weeks, but the Graziano … Continue reading

State suspends Hollis pharmacy technician over oxycodone allegations
Posted: Published on June 26th, 2012
The state Board of Pharmacy suspended the license of pharmacy technician Dawn Jonis, 53, of Hollis last Thursday and set an emergency hearing on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Jonis was arrested by Hollis Police June 2 for allegedly stealing narcotics from her employer, Hollis Pharmacy, whose owner Vahrij Manoukian also is chairman of the state Board of Pharmacy. Jonis is alleged to have stolen more than 3,000 oxycodone tablets from the pharmacy. She was arraigned in Nashua District Court and bound over to Superior Court on two counts of Theft by Unauthorized Taking, Class A misdemeanors, and two counts of Possession of a Narcotic Drug, Class B felonies. The Pharmacy Board hearing will determine whether Joniss privileges will remain suspended during the course of its investigation. Hollis Police Chief James Sartelle said Monday that police conducted video surveillance after being notified by the pharmacy of a suspected employee theft and obtained an arrest warrant and search warrant based on the investigation. Sartelle said while the town has had other cases of employee theft, I dont believe weve ever had a case of somebody stealing drugs from the pharmacy, he said. @Body Copy tagline diamond:. Pharmacy Services Agreement
Posted: Published on June 26th, 2012
26 June 2012 Pharmacy Services Agreement The Pharmacy Services Agreement (PSA) is the contract between pharmacy owners and their local District Health Board (DHB). It has been consulted on with the DHBs and sector agents, including the Pharmacy Guild of New Zealand (the Guild), over the last 18 months and holds the biggest change in services and funding the profession has had in over 50 years. On 1 July 2012, community pharmacy will begin a three year transitional PSA which intends to move pharmacy from being paid solely by a medicine dispensing fee, to a patient-focused payment mechanism. This will align the profession more closely within the primary health care team. The transitional PSA is a reconfiguration of services around patients medicine management and better utilises pharmacists as the medicines experts. The Guild supports the PSA and the ability of all parties involved to work together to ensure its successful implementation, says the Guilds Executive Chair, Karen Crisp. We agree that some pharmacists have not yet got enough information to fully understand the Agreement and we are working hard with the DHBs to get this information to our members. After raising concerns over tight timeframes and a lack of information … Continue reading

Pharmacy contract in chaos as deadline looms
Posted: Published on June 24th, 2012
Maryan STREET Health Spokesperson 24 June 2012 MEDIA STATEMENT Pharmacy contract in chaos as deadline looms 900 pharmacies up and down the country are being forced to sign a contract for services this week with many not having had time to digest its contents, says Labours Health spokesperson Maryan Street. Pharmacists are essential, frontline, health service providers that New Zealanders see and rely on most, after their doctor. This contract, enforced by DHBs, introduces a new way of looking after people with long term conditions, such as the elderly, people with chronic illnesses and the very frail. It has potentially huge implications for the way pharmacists work and for the funding structures they work within, Maryan Street said. It also has a complicated funding formula which has no figures attached to it after 1 February 2013. The 160+ page, three year, contract for services gives pharmacists no knowledge as to the fee they will be paid after 1 February 2013, yet must be signed by 5pm on 26 June. This process is causing chaos. Pharmacists across the country dont know what they are signing up to, Maryan Street said. After inadequate answers from the Associate Minister of Health in the … Continue reading

People's Pharmacy: Mouthwash as an insect repellent
Posted: Published on June 24th, 2012
Q: To keep your picnic area free of insects, put Listerine in a spray bottle and spray the outdoor table and chairs. You will be bug-free for a few hours, if not days. It doesn't hurt the environment, you or your pets. It's also inexpensive. A: Others also have recommended Listerine (or its house-brand counterpart) as a way of discouraging insect invaders. Perhaps the herbal ingredients (eucalyptol, menthol, thymol and methyl salicylate) that give amber Listerine its distinctive aroma also repel bugs. Q: I developed rosacea a few years ago. My wife told me to use Selsun Blue. I wash my hair with it and drag the suds down over my face. I thought this idea was bogus, but the rosacea disappeared. A: Rosacea is an inflammation of the skin that causes redness and bumps on the nose, forehead and cheeks. Dermatologists think it might be due to an immune response to fungi, bacteria or virus. Selsun Blue has antifungal activity. That might explain why many readers report this dandruff shampoo can be helpful against rosacea. Q: I quit Zoloft after nine years and suffered horrendous withdrawal symptoms: nausea; brain zaps; vertigo; headaches; digestive problems; and numbness and tingling in … Continue reading

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) Caddo Parish high school seniors will be able to train as pharmacy technicians by taking a course that starts in August. The Times reports (http://bit.ly/MK0CD6) Fair Park High in Shreveport will add the two-semester course to its medical careers program. The class also will offer three hours of college credit through Bossier Parish Community College. Students who successfully complete the classes will be eligible to take the state licensing exam when they reach age 18. The community college will provide the instructor. The college offers a certificate program and associate degree in pharmacy technology. "We feel like the pharmacy technician program will be a really good fit at Fair Park with the medical careers program," said Renee Sears, director of dual enrollment at the community college. "The principal made very plain that he wants to afford his students the opportunity to earn a good wage while they are pursuing whatever (college) degree they want to pursue." Jobs for pharmacy technicians are expected to grow by 3 percent over the next six years. Pay for someone with a moderate amount of experience averages $27,000 a year, Sears said. ___ Information from: The Times, http://www.shreveporttimes.com View post: Caddo adds … Continue reading

Pharmacy owner sees expansion opportunities in move
Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2012
Bruce Lefkowitz sits in a tiny office where his black chair smacks the back of his accountant's seat. There's no air conditioning, no windows - and no complaints. Lefkowitz, the owner of Harrold's Pharmacy, swears he prefers it this way. Even cubicles offer more breathing room, but there's history here. His grandfather sat in this office and his father sat in this office. Now he's at the helm. But the space problems at Harrold's Pharmacy aren't limited to Lefkowitz's office - there is limited parking, a small sales floor and an inefficient setup - and he knows it's time to move, even if it is just two blocks down Old River Road, to a venue more than twice the size. "We've been at the same location for 65 years, so I didn't intend on moving," Lefkowitz said Wednesday. "But when I saw the steady growth we were going through, and that property became available, we thought maybe it was time." Lefkowitz bought the Old River Road Bakery property in March for $50,000 and the sale was finalized Monday. Lefkowitz's expansion goal hit a major milestone Wednesday. Wilkes-Barre's planning commission voted 4-0 to approve four variances with the property - such … Continue reading
