Expelled pharmacy student sues Tech, challenges due process issues
Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2012
A student expelled from the pharmacy school at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Centers Abilene campus is suing for readmission, accusing the university of violating his due process rights in a disciplinary proceeding. Brian Brister, expelled a year ago, accused HSC officials of violating his rights to a fair review of several disciplinary complaints by appointing a review panel that wasnt impartial, and failing to give him reasonable access to information related to the disciplinary investigation before the hearing. According to the suit, filed earlier this month in the 99th District Court in Lubbock, HSC officials accused Brister in the spring of 2010 of: Signing on to a university computer with someone elses user identification and password and changing his grade in a class. Behaving in a disruptive manner when a university official approached him about reimbursing another student for items that were thrown out when a refrigerator was being cleaned out. Being in an area of the Abilene School of Pharmacy that was off-limits to students outside normal hours. Downloading sexually explicit material using Techs computer system. The download used an unauthorized virtual machine software that allows another operating system to run on a host computers environment which also … Continue reading

New scholarship helps ETSU pharmacy students go into independent pharmacy
Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2012
Fourth year pharmacy student Stephanie Gordon Elliot always thought she would go into retail pharmacy in a small chain. In the past few years, though, she has realized that she wanted to do something more with pharmacy and that opportunity exists in a small community setting, she said. Elliott, from Jonesville, Va., and Arissa Vaughn, Kingsport, both will get the opportunity to work in a small independent community pharmacy upon graduation from East Tennessee State Universitys College of Pharmacy through a new scholarship provided by Cardinal Health. The scholarship also will provide for half their tuition for their final year of school, which is next year. Elliott and Vaughn are the first recipients of the scholarship at ETSU. It means a lot, Elliott said of the scholarship. Its more than just a scholarship amount, its an opportunity. Steve Lawrence, vice president of independent sales at Cardinal Health, said his company started these scholarships about a year ago at various pharmacy schools for final-year pharmacy students to entice them to go into independent pharmacy. Once they graduate were going to partner them, hopefully, with an independent (pharmacy) owner who is ready to transition their business and that way we can keep … Continue reading

Second pharmacy chain to cut drug mark-up charge
Posted: Published on May 30th, 2012
The Irish Times - Wednesday, May 30, 2012 CONOR POPE and PAMELA DUNCAN A SECOND large chain of pharmacies has announced it is scrapping its mark-ups on prescription charges. The move will see the cost of many leading drugs fall significantly across the 26 stores trading under the Sam McCauley banner. The pharmacy chain has followed the lead of Boots Ireland, which yesterday announced it was abandoning the traditional 50 per cent mark-up that pharmacists add to the cost price of a drug on top of a 5 dispensing fee, in favour of a single 7 professional services fee that will be added to the cost price of drugs. Boots said its 10 most expensive prescription drugs will fall in price by an average of 25 per cent. This will save people on medications for conditions including asthma and heart disease up to 300 a year. A person with asthma who pays 95 a month for drugs will see the cost drop to just over 70, a saving of about 290 a year. Monthly costs for a person with high blood pressure and cholesterol will fall from 77 to 66, an annual saving of nearly 150. The move on pricing … Continue reading

A judge has found a man acted out of character when he held up a Brisbane pharmacy armed with a knife last year. Jamie Patrick Raines pleaded guilty to armed robbery and four other charges relating to fraud and forgery in the Brisbane District Court this morning, after spending close to six months in remanded custody. The court heard Raines, 41, described as "normally loving, caring and hard working" by his references, had suffered a marriage break down prior to the events for which he had been charged on December 4 and 5, after one of his two young children became seriously ill. Advertisement: Story continues below Stressed and having suffered health problems of his own, Raines, who worked as a patient care assistant at Greenslopes Private Hospital, was said to have taken a prescription pad and fraudulently used it to acquire the pain killing drug Endone. A pharmacist at the Village Discount Pharmacy in Upper Mount Gravatt queried the prescription with a doctor at the Greenslopes Hospital and Raines received a phone call from the hospital concerning the matter. The court heard Raines, who had already lost his marriage and the family home, perceived he was also about to … Continue reading

Canadian recognition for College of Pharmacy
Posted: Published on May 29th, 2012
Qatar Universitys College of Pharmacy (CPH) has been officially recognised by the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC), the national certification body for the pharmacy profession in Canada. The move by PEBC recognises the Colleges BSc (Pharm) graduates as graduates of a pharmacy programme accredited by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP). This means the colleges graduates will not be required to sit the PEBC Pharmacist Evaluating Examination but will be permitted direct entry to the PEBC Pharmacist Qualifying Examination, which is typically reserved for pharmacy graduates in Canada and the US. The PEBC will also deliver Part 1 of its Pharmacist Qualifying Examination in Qatar on a pilot basis. This will take place in November, allowing CPH students to sit the exam in Doha, making it the first time it will be delivered outside of North America, and which, if successful, will be repeated annually. CPH Dean Dr Peter Jewesson described the recognition as a very important milestone for the new programme, the university and for Qatar-Canada relations. Under the new National Health Strategy, Qatar seeks to improve healthcare outcomes for its citizens by improving services and research aimed at improving the effectiveness and quality of … Continue reading
