Pharmacy Clerk Shoots and Kills Robbery Suspect
Posted: Published on January 9th, 2013
Police say a pharmacy clerk shot a man who tried robbing him and his mother in their pharmacy. It happened at about 6:30 Tuesday night atthe Almond AvenuePharmacyin Madera. Police say two men barged in through the back door...firing a handgun. They say the son fired back and shot one of the suspects. He ran off with his accomplice, but only made it a few blocks down. A blood trail led police to his body. The mother was shot in the leg, and is expected to be ok. We can't remember the last time we had something as extreme as this. Ten rounds were fired. Five by each party... the scene is pretty extensive inside the building, said Madera Police Chief Steve Frazier. Police are still searching for the second suspect, but had little details about him. The pharmacy doesn't have surveillance video, and police are interviewing witnesses. The owners arent facing charges, but the investigation is ongoing. DOJ official wants trustee in Mass. pharmacy case
Posted: Published on January 9th, 2013
BOSTON (AP) -- An independent trustee must be appointed to oversee the bankruptcy of a Massachusetts pharmacy linked to a meningitis outbreak because of the firm's "gross mismanagement," among other reasons, a Justice Department official argued Tuesday. U.S. Trustee William Harrington also argued in his motion that an accountant the New England Compounding Center hired to lead it through the Chapter 11 process had a hopeless conflict of interest because the NECC's board can fire him at any time. Harrington accused the NECC of hiring Keith Lowey and appointing him to its board just before it filed for bankruptcy "in an apparent attempt to forestall the appointment of a trustee." "Creditors and victims of the (NECC's) conduct should have an independent, conflict free party developing a reorganization or liquidation strategy," Harrington wrote in the motion filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Massachusetts. Daniel Cohn, the NECC bankruptcy attorney, said the company would oppose the motion for appointment of a trustee because it would hinder progress toward the purpose of its bankruptcy filing, which the company has said was to set up a fund to fairly compensate victims. "Our primary concern is that appointment of a trustee would be a … Continue reading

FDA quietly steps in to inspect a second Massachusetts pharmacy
Posted: Published on January 9th, 2013
By Kay Lazar, Globe Staff Federal regulators have quietly stepped in to inspect another Massachusetts pharmacy similar to New England Compounding Center, the Framingham compounding company blamed for the national fungal meningitis outbreak that has sickened more than 660 people and killed 40. Inspectors from the US Food and Drug Administration recently joined state officials in their ongoing surprise inspections of compounders to inspect one pharmacy because the regulators determined the companys actions fell under federal jurisdiction, Dr. Madeleine Biondolillo, director of the states Bureau of Health Care Safety and Quality, said in an interview Tuesday. Biondolillo declined to name the pharmacy inspected by the FDA, or discuss the precise reason the FDA stepped in, but said, The FDA has authority over certain things and if they feel this registrant is performing business practices in their domain, thats their call. Investigators have said that New England Compounding violated state laws by mass producing drugs, behaving more like a manufacturer, which would fall under federal jurisdiction. Biondolillo said the surprise inspections of sterile compounding pharmacies, ordered in October by Governor Deval Patrick, are nearly complete. She said 38 pharmacies in Massachusetts identified themselves as performing sterile compounding -- making products that … Continue reading

Public meeting on local pharmacy
Posted: Published on January 9th, 2013
9 January 2013 Last updated at 04:09 ET A public meeting to gauge views on a community pharmacy in Aberdeenshire is set to take place. There was local outcry after the Tarves GP surgery closed when it lost its pharmacy dispensing rights. It could reopen after NHS Grampian's board approved a plan to allow the Haddo Medical Group which runs it to resume dispensing rights in Pitmedden. Campaigners in favour of the community-led pharmacy hope it will raise money for health provision in the village. If the application to open the service is approved by NHS Grampian a range of NHS services could be provided, including a drop-in clinic for minor ailments and a smoking cessation service. The decision to take away pharmacy dispensing rights from the Tarves surgery led to it being closed down in September. Haddo Medical Group also initially lost dispensing rights in Pitmedden. The public consultation take place at 19:30 in Pitmedden village hall. Read more from the original source: Public meeting on local pharmacy … Continue reading
