Painful Prescriptions: Dangerous consequences when pharmacists get it wrong

Posted: Published on July 19th, 2012

LOVELAND, OH (FOX 19) - Sitting at her kitchen table, Margaret Link recalls those strange months when she just didn't act like herself. "I would fall asleep at my desk," she said. She also remembers walking out in front of a car after work only to be rescued by her sister. There was also her son's out-of-town hockey weekend, much of which she spent sleeping in the hotel room. As soon as they checked-in, "I immediately went to bed and told him to go hang-out with the other parents and kids. And I just slept all the way until the next morning." Then one day, she showed-up at her pharmacy looking to re-fill her prescription for the allergy drug Claritin. This was back when doctors had to prescribe it. "And they looked-up my name and said that they didn't have me on Claritin," Link recalled. "I said, Well, that's what I've been taking.'" She called her son at home to get the prescription number off the bottle. "And they told me, That's not what we've been fillingWe've got you on a pill for your nerves, honey.'" People at the pharmacy told her that someone misread her doctor's prescription. Written in … Continue reading

Gold Coast doctor sanctioned for steroid prescriptions

Posted: Published on July 18th, 2012

A Gold Coast doctor has inappropriately prescribed medications, including steroids, to 14 patients. An official investigation into anabolic steroid use on the Gold Coast has netted a long-standing GP, who inappropriately prescribed the drugs to 14 patients over more than nine years. Peter Grant, who faces sanctions, has practised as a GP in Queensland since 1985. In late 2009, Queensland Health cancelled his power to prescribe some classes of restricted drugs after the department investigated the GP's practice of writing scripts for medications "for body building rather than therapeutic purposes". Dr Grant's activities came to light when the department conducted a state-wide audit of the dispensing of pseudoephedrine. Advertisement At the same time, the department was conducting an ongoing investigation into anabolic steroid use in the Gold Coast area. Dr Grant agreed he had inappropriately prescribed medications to 14 patients at the Mermaid Beach Medical Centre, according to Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal deputy president Judge Fleur Kingham's recent ruling. The earliest allegation dated back to February 2000, when Dr Grant took on a new patient. "In all he treated him for more than nine years, until April 2009," according to Judge Kingham. Concerns raised over dementia drug prescriptions

Posted: Published on July 17th, 2012

Doctors in some areas in England are still "inappropriately over-prescribing" anti-psychotic drugs to dementia patients, campaigners have said. Doctors in some areas in England are still "inappropriately over-prescribing" anti-psychotic drugs to dementia patients, campaigners said. Daybreak's Helen Drew reports. More than halving the number of people with dementia receiving anti-psychotics marks a huge change in the right direction. "But we can and must go further. That is why we are developing a risk assessment tool to help doctors use the drugs safely and appropriately. I have also ordered the rerun of this audit to keep tabs on the action that is being taken to tackle the unacceptable regional variation that we have exposed. "The momentum is building and I am determined to take all necessary steps to protect people from unnecessary prescribing." This audit breaks new ground in examining prescribing patterns for dementia patients and highlights areas that GPs and other practices who want to deliver the best possible care need to focus on. "It is encouraging that prescribing of anti-psychotic drugs is falling. "However, it is clear that the picture nationally is mixed and that everyone involved in the care of those with dementia needs to look carefully at … Continue reading

Students abusing stimulant prescriptions for academic edge

Posted: Published on July 17th, 2012

A bottle of Ritalin sits on the counter of the Post Haste Pharmacy And Surgical Store on June 16, 2003 in Hollywood, Fla. (Joe Raedle/Getty Images) Audio player code: As high schools and colleges continue to become more competitive, students are seeking out medication for an academic edge. The drugs, stimulants including Ritalin and Adderall, are usually prescribed to people with attention disorders. But what's the cost when these drugs get into the hands of students who don't actually need them? We wanted to talk more about this topic after a recent New York Times Room for Debate collection. Judith Warner, contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and an opinion columnist for Time.com, will join The Daily Circuit Monday to discuss the over-use of stimulants in academic environments. "The widespread abuse of stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall by teenagers and college students who don't have medical diagnoses of A.D.H.D. is a problem that has been created as much by adults as by the young people who actively engage in the illegal use and trade of the drugs," she wrote for The New York Times. Psychologist and family physician Leonard Sax will also join the discussion. "The next time … Continue reading

When patients demand tests and prescriptions, doctors should think twice

Posted: Published on July 3rd, 2012

As an infectious-disease specialist, I often see patients who complain of a headache, nasal congestion and short-term fatigue. There is no fever or cough, and it appears the problem is sinusitis, which requires no further testing or treatment. But when I say, Lets wait and watch, many of my patients seem disappointed. In some cases, it seems they are satisfied only if I prescribe an antibiotic or order a blood test or X-ray. I understand where they are coming from: I often feel similarly let down when I take my daughter to the pediatrician for an earache and leave without a prescription for an antibiotic. When we go to the doctor, most of us want something done, even if the benefits are questionable or marginal. Both parties are at fault: Many patients demand tests, and often doctors encourage them. How much excess care is being carried out is debatable, but some studies indicate that nearly 30 percent of U.S. health-care expenditures are unnecessary. That would be $700 billion of waste each year. Choosing Wisely, a new campaign supported by several professional medical societies and consumer groups, is encouraging doctors and patients to kick this habit to curb the overuse of … Continue reading

Doctors protest Govt prescriptions for medical fraternity

Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2012

Mumbai, July 1: A family doctor in South Mumbai will find it impossible to have a 500 square-feet-area clinic, given the prohibitive real-estate costs in the city. The doctors medical skill notwithstanding, he or she could still end up on the wrong side of the law, say doctors protesting the recently notified Clinical Establishment Act (2010). The Act sets out to standardise practices in the patients interest, say Health Ministry officials. But doctors say the Act was passed without discussion, and as a result, is not in touch with ground realities. In fact, it puts the responsibility of a patient entirely at the doctors door-step, even when it should be shouldered by the Government, they say. As a result, a well-intended law stands caught in the cross-fire, as doctors protest this and two other Government initiatives, affecting the medical fraternity. The Clinical Establishments Act sets out to regulate private hospitals and clinics, ensuring that no centre is run without registration etc. A key achievement of this Act was that no person be refused emergency treatment. A doctor has to stabilise the patient and send him or her across to the nearest referral hospital - failing which, a non-bailable warrant could … Continue reading

Carilion will use federal grant to help with prescriptions – www.roanoke.com

Posted: Published on June 16th, 2012

With a $4.2 million, three-year federal grant, Carilion New River Valley Medical Center plans to train pharmacists to play a bigger role in managing patients' prescription drugs and preventing hospital readmissions. The Carilion Clinic hospital was among 81 recipients of Health Care Innovation Awards announced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Friday. "We think it will really help deliver a completely different level of care and modern care in rural Virginia," said Dr. John Piatkowski, the hospital's administrator. Carilion has teamed up with Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy, Aetna and CVS Caremark for the grant. The partners will work to provide a new model of managing prescription drugs in patients with chronic disease. In doing this, they estimate that $4.3 million in health care costs can be avoided, with much of the savings from preventing unnecessary hospital readmissions, Piatkowski said. The project will train pharmacists to be more directly involved in patient care, said Bill Lee, the program's lead pharmacist. While pharmacists are involved with patient care during a person's hospital stay, they have little direct interaction with patients and are rarely involved after a patient is discharged. Under the proposed model in the grant, … Continue reading
