New photoswitch therapy restores useful vision in blind animals

Posted: Published on December 13th, 2014

Retinitis pigmentosa is a particularly terrifying form of late onset blindness, in which the sufferers vision slowly degrades from the periphery, in. Your view of theworld slowly narrows to a point, and one can only imagine the frustration such a slow, torturous process would create. These sorts of degenerative diseases are often attacked from the preventative side, which gives thema spectrum of possible successes, from total prevention to simple prolonging of the process tobuy more time with sight. Usually, trying to cure something is much more binary, with a cured-or-not logic that doesnt tend to reward partial successes. Anew study looking at certain types of blindness in lab animals may have made just such an interactive step forward, however, restoring light sensitivity in eyes that havent seen for some time. The crux of the insight is a type of molecule called a photoswitch. As the name implies, a photoswitch is a molecule that responds in a back-and-forth manner to the presence or absence of light. In this case, the molecules switch in terms of their physical shape, flipping back and forth between a larger and a more compact state put them in the right place, and these shape changes can … Continue reading

She has a keen vision for the disabled

Azaan Javaid: New Delhi, Dec 10, 2014, DHNS: In the year 1999, Renuka Bhagat, graduating from Jalandhar College, was preparing for her examinations when for the first time in her life faced difficulties while reading. Days later, her doctors words devastated her when medical examinations revealed that she was suffering from Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) a genetic condition that causes severe vision impairment and often blindness. Over the next few years, Bhagat would lose her eyesight and enter a state of depression lasting for years together. I was in my second year of college. I was pursuing my graduation in advertisement and sales promotion and suddenly the world turned upside down for me when I lost my vision and was not able to read any text. The confidence in me was shattered as I moved from a person with ability to a person with disability, Bhagat said barely holding back her tears. Bhagat mentioned about her plans of doing her Masters in Mass Communication. She managed to complete her graduation but found it extremely difficult to get into a decent college with provision for the differently abled. I was not getting the subjects which I wanted to study, said Bhagat. Ask … Continue reading

New therapy holds promise for restoring vision

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 8-Dec-2014 Contact: Robert Sanders rlsanders@berkeley.edu 510-643-6998 University of California - Berkeley @UCBerkeleyNews A new genetic therapy not only helped blind mice regain enough light sensitivity to distinguish flashing from non-flashing lights, but also restored light response to the retinas of dogs, setting the stage for future clinical trials of the therapy in humans. The therapy employs a virus to insert a gene for a common ion channel into normally blind cells of the retina that survive after the light-responsive rod and cone photoreceptor cells die as a result of diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa. Photoswitches - chemicals that change shape when hit with light -are then attached to the ion channels to make them open in response to light, activating the retinal cells and restoring light sensitivity. Afflicting people of all ages, retinitis pigmentosa causes a gradual loss of vision, akin to losing pixels in a digital camera. Sight is lost from the periphery to the center, usually leaving people with the inability to navigate their surroundings. Some 100,000 Americans suffer from this group of inherited retinal diseases. In a paper appearing online this week in the early edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy … Continue reading

'Never use disability as an excuse not to achieve success'

Posted: Published on November 27th, 2014

'Never use disability as an excuse not to achieve success' KOTA KINABALU: One must never use his or her disability as an excuse to not achieve success. Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Postgraduate Award recipient Jailani Idris, who suffers from an inherited, degenerative eye disease known as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), is a firm believer of this principle. Jailani, who just received his PhD in Curriculum and Teaching, had suffered the disease since young, leaving him with impaired vision that will eventually result on total vision loss. "There was a time in my life when I had decided to quit and give up as it was not easy for me to pursue my studies with my condition besides the need to care for my two disabled children," he said, adding that he had to read and type his work in large fonts due to his eyesight problems. "I did not give up. It was difficult but I did not give up. I wanted to show to my family and children that I was capable of doing it," he said. Jailani, who had four children, also said two of his children had suffered from a medical condition known as Hydrocephalus or 'water on … Continue reading

Breakthrough technology allows blind Philadelphia woman to see

Posted: Published on November 15th, 2014

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Electronic eyes are giving her back the gift of sight. "I look left to right. Is that the edge over there? Oh my God." Those words were part of the magical moments in late August when Fran Fulton saw again for the first time in 15 years. She was aided by electronic "eyes" that, until now, were science fiction. But Fran's new second sight is very real. She lost her vision to retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease. In RP, cells in the retina - the vision center - die over time. By her late 40s, Fran was blind. Last year, her son urged her to check out the Argus 2 system at Wills Eye Hospital which had just gotten government approval. She was all for it.
