The news that Formula One legend Michael Schumacher was moved to a hospital in Paris last week for pioneering stem cell therapy has provoked a fever of hope and speculation among fans that his condition could be improved. After suffering devastating head injuries in a ski accident almost six years ago, Schumacher was placed in a coma for six months and has been receiving treatment at his home in Switzerland. Patients with progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) have higher levels of protein markers of activated glial cells than those with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) or patients with other neurological disorders, according to a new study. The findings also indicated that scoring the extent of glial involvement in relation to nerve cell damage in serum may help differentiate these two groups of MS patients. The Spinal Cord Injury/Disorders Day Treatment Program (SCI-D) is an interdisciplinary rehabilitation program designed to provide intense therapy for patients who have had a spinal cord injury (SCI) or similar impairments. Patients can be referred to the program after their inpatient rehabilitation hospital stay or once they are able to transition from home health. The program is overseen by a medical director, psychologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and a nurse case manager, all with specialized training in spinal cord injuries.
