Intranasal nerve growth factor repairs injured spinal cord neurons

Posted: Published on July 18th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 17-Jul-2014 Contact: Meng Zhao eic@nrren.org 86-138-049-98773 Neural Regeneration Research Nerve growth factor can be delivered to the brain by intranasal administration without risk for treatment of brain diseases. Dr. Luigi Aloe, Cellular Biology and Neurobiology Institute, National Research Council, Italy and his team performed a study to investigate whether, by intranasal administration, the nerve growth factor bypasses the blood-brain barrier and turns over the spinal cord neurons. Results showed that at 3 weeks after intranasal administration of nerve growth factor, the contents of nerve growth factor and its receptor in the spinal cord were increased, and the deficits in locomotor behaviors were improved. These findings indicate that intranasal nerve growth factor can bypass blood-brain barrier and affect spinal cord neurons in spinal cord injury. These results provide experimental evidence for intranasal nerve growth factor for repair of spinal cord injury. Related results were published in Neural Regeneration Research (Vol. 9, No. 10, 2014). ### Article: "Intranasal nerve growth factor bypasses the blood-brain barrier and affects spinal cord neurons in spinal cord injury" by Luigi Aloe1, Patrizia Bianchi1, Alberto De Bellis2, Marzia Soligo3, Maria Luisa Rocco1 (1 Cellular Biology and Neurobiology Institute, National Research Council (CNR), Rome, Italy; … Continue reading

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2014

TAMPA Twice a week, Gabriela Camargo and her husband, Romulo, get up before dawn to get him dressed, settled in his wheelchair and ready for the two-hour trip to Longwood, near Orlando, for the kind of intense, long-term physical therapy they hope will one day get him walking again. After Romulo undergoes three hours of guided workouts on advanced exercise machines at Project Walk a therapy center unlike any in the Tampa Bay area, they say they fight the traffic back. "I-4 is crazy!'' says Gabriela, adding that the couple usually arrives back home in New Tampa about 3:30 p.m. After about a year of the routine, Gaby, as she's called, decided that she and "Romy'' should open a nonprofit intensive therapy center in Tampa. "I thought it was a crazy idea,'' said Romy, an Army Special Forces officer who was shot in the neck and paralyzed from the shoulders down during an ambush in Afghanistan in 2008. But the more he thought about it, the more he liked the plan. They seem to be on their way, having collected about $216,000 in corporate and individual donations toward the $750,000 they figure they'll need for two years of operating expenses. … Continue reading

When they said, youll never be able to walk again, I couldnt accept that. Ive always been independent and wanted to do more. After just three months of physical therapy, Nate was proving his doctors wrong, I cant say I looked graceful walking around, you know, but I was walking. Even with this accomplishment, it was clear to Nate that his years of golfing professionally were over. He turned to Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) for help. I was given three choices after taking a test (at VR); I could be a toll booth operator, an insurance adjuster, or I could go back to school, Nate said. For me it wasnt a choice.
