Posted: Published on August 12th, 2013

WINDHOEK, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Health and Social Services and Motor-Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund will establish Namibia's first Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Rehabilitation Unit within the Ministry of Health next year, Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA) reported. MVA chief operations officer Rosalia Martins-Hausiku said the unit will be set up in partnership with Spinalis Foundation, a Swedish charitable foundation specialising in rehabilitation of SCI survivors and promotion of research and treatment development in spinal cord injuries. Martins-Hausiku said the setting up of the unit is part of MVA Fund's efforts to provide improved services for people injured on the road. "The Fund has shifted focus from a compensatory scheme to rehabilitation and subsequently to transporting injured persons from crash scenes to medical facilities," she said. "The goal is to rehabilitate sufferers to a level of independence to enable them to return to work and school and become economically productive," she said. Medical Superintendent at Windhoek Central Hospital, Sara Shalongo, said the unit is expected to add value to effective rehabilitation and life enhancement for Namibians with spinal cord injuries. -- BERNAMA Read the original post: Namibia To Set Up First Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Unit … Continue reading

Can Paralyzed Pets Help Paralyzed Vets?

Posted: Published on August 10th, 2013

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Could paralyzed dogs hold the clues to helping people with spinal cord injuries? New research on the subjectis looking promising. Paralyzed pooches could be thekey to a breakthrough treatment for paralyzed veterans. The hope is that therapies that work in dogs might also be more likely to work in humans. Thats welcome news to veteran Glendon Bentley who has been paralyzed since 1996. I was in the process of unloading an 1,100 pound crate from the back of the truck when the wind caught it just right and the crate fell out of the truck, he said. Bentley said any progress would bring vets like him hope. Anything to improve the quality of life that would be the best, he said. The Department of Defense agrees. Thats why its now funding research at Texas A&M, wherescientists are testing a drug that would block enzymes that do damage to the spinal cord. Hopefully, that is going to lead to is better mobility, better ability to empty the bladder and that is going to be beneficial of course to dogs, and hopefully that can be scaled up to humans as well, said Jonathan Levine, an associate professor of neurology … Continue reading

PRC: Stem cell not for general practitioners

Posted: Published on August 7th, 2013

THE Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) stressed Tuesday that the emerging stem cell treatment cannot be practiced just by any kind of medical doctor but only by specialists. In its position paper on Stem Cell Medicine, the Professional Regulatory Board of Medicine (PRBOM) pointed that local physicians looking to practice stem cell treatment cannot just perform it sans the necessary education, structured/supervised training and extensive clinical experience. "Not anyone who can inject a chemotherapeutic drug qualifies to be a medical oncologist," said the PRBOM. The board said it is unacceptable to claim that stem cell medicine falls already under general practice since anybody can do it "as it only entails the injection of stem cell solution." The PRBOM said that while injection can be performed by any general medical practitioner, it cannot be the same for the desired result of the treatment such as cancer, autism, diabetes, stroke, liver disease, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease, among others. "Physicians, who claim to be specialists and experts in stem cell therapy, should have had extensive training in the treatment of the mentioned diseases and disorders," said PRBOM. It added that the training program should include quality assurance mechanisms, such as … Continue reading

Offering Neuromodulation Earlier Could be Better in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2013

Newswise Spinal cord stimulation should be considered earlier than a last resort for treating a rare but debilitating chronic pain condition known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), according to a research analysis in Neuromodulation: Technology at the Neural Interface, the journal of the International Neuromodulation Society. Members held an online discussion about the topic in July during one of the societys periodic Expert Panels. The discussion July 7 21 was moderated by recognized leaders in research and treatment of CRPS. The interactive session took place shortly after the societys 11th biennial World Congress Berlin in June, where some 1,400 delegates addressed the full range of neuromodulation therapies for chronic pain, movement disorder, and emerging indications. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) to treat chronic neuropathic pain of the trunk and limbs has been FDA-approved since 1989, and word about the option is growing among patients, referring physicians, and allied health professionals. CRPS patients such as Ed Levien of Bethesda, MD are trying to raise more awareness about treatment options for chronic pain. He only learned about SCS through another patient, 12 years after suffering an injury that triggered pain so severe he could not tolerate anything touching his affected arm. Complex … Continue reading

Cloud EHR Lessons Learned in Haiti

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2013

Healthcare providers in the United States have preconceived notions about electronic health records-namely, that EHR systems haven't lived up to their promise of transforming healthcare by improving efficiency and cutting costs. The healthcare industry also has preconceived notions about cloud computing, too-namely, that the cloud isn't secure enough for patient data. Go to Haiti, though, and the story's dramatically different. There are no preconceptions, no tales of IT implementations gone wrong and no government mandates to adopt technology. As one health worker told Pierre Valette, vice president of content communications for cloud EHR and practice management software vendor athenahealth, "They've got nothing to unlearn." Treating Spinal Cord Injuries After Haiti Earthquake The connection between Haiti and Watertown, Mass.-based athenahealth began several years ago, when CEO Jonathan Bush began donating to St. Boniface Hospital in rural southern Haiti, where running water and electricity are scarce. After the Jan. 12, 2010 earthquake that destroyed much of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, the hospital and the Massachusetts-based St. Boniface Haiti Foundation established the country's first spinal cord injury treatment center. Spinal cord injuries in the developing world are much harder to treat at all stages of the care process, from transportation to the hospital to … Continue reading
