Stem cell controversy highlights difficulty of judging contrarian research

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

The strangest and most gripping story in science over the past few weeks has been the Japanese and Boston stem-cell papers, in which researchers appeared to show that mature mouse blood cells could be transformed into powerful stem cells with a startlingly simple method. As soon as they were published in Nature, the discovery was greeted with amazement, excitement, and also a heavy dose of skepticism. This week researchers seem to be backing away, with one calling for the papers to be retracted, and as I type this post, were awaiting an announcement from a Japanese research institution on Friday that will reveal the progress of an ongoing investigation into alleged problems with the research. But as of now, the papers stand, and nobody wants to dismiss a technique that really could be a breakthrough. The difficulty of sorting out visionary ideas from crackpot onesor even outright fraudhas long been part of science, especially at the cutting edge. Many weird ideas (weird, that is, after the acid test of time) have been advanced in the canonical form of true science. Yet there are many examples in history of people we now regard as outstanding scientists whose early writings look like … Continue reading

Troubled stem cell papers to be addressed Friday

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

A Japanese research institution plans to make an announcement Friday about its investigation of two highly controversial stem cell studies authored by Boston and Japanese scientists. That announcement comes as more doubt has been cast on the papers, which reported that stem cells could be created by dipping mature cells in an acid batha surprisingly simple technique that stunned scientists. On Monday evening in Japan, a coauthor of both papers announced he no longer had confidence in the findings due to problems that have emerged with images and data. The scientist, Teruhiko Wakayama, urged his Boston and Japanese coauthors to withdraw the papers published in the journal Nature in January and to redo the experiments so that they could be meticulously reviewed. A Japanese website that has been posting critiques of the paper also published images from the lead scientists doctoral thesis that appear strikingly similar to ones that appeared in one of the controversial papers. It also posted a 22-page portion of the thesis by Haruko Obokata that appears virtually identical to a National Institutes of Health website describing stem cells. Dr. Charles Vacanti, an anesthesiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Womens Hospital who was senior author of one of … Continue reading

Riken Considers Retracting Two Stem-Cell Studies

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2014

Research that outlined a simpler, quicker way of making stem cells may be retracted after one of the scientists involved expressed doubts about the basis for the experiments. Japans Riken research center is investigating two studies published in the journal Nature in January and is considering options including retracting them, the government-funded organization said in a statement on its website today. Riken will give a briefing on the probe March 14. Teruhiko Wakayama, who worked on the research at the University of Yamanashi in Japan, said in an interview with public broadcaster NHK yesterday that he was no longer sure of the premise of the data he used to establish the experiments and that the studies should be withdrawn for review. The comments underscore the pressure researchers face amid Japans push into stem-cell science following Shinya Yamanakas 2012 Nobel Prize. Its a disappointment for the community when such high profile papers may possibly be retracted, said Nissim Benvenisty, director of the stem-cell unit at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, in an interview. Its reassuring that the investigators in this institute are themselves taking the initiative to look into what might have gone wrong. The studies found that ordinary cells taken … Continue reading
