Scientists discover a new, simpler way to make stem cells – Boston.com

Posted: Published on March 1st, 2014

A team of Boston and Japanese researchers stunned the scientific world Wednesday by revealing a remarkably simple and unexpected way to create stem cells able to give rise to any tissue in the body. To transform mature cells into powerful stem cells that are a biological blank slate, the team simply bathed them in an acid bath for half an hour. The technique appears to be far easier and faster than current methods for creating these cells, which scientists are racing to develop into therapies for a range of diseases. The result is shocking, astounding, revolutionary, and weird, said scientists not accustomed to using such exuberant words to describe new research findings. The finding has been officially reported only in mice, but human studies are underway. Researchers at Brigham and Womens Hospital said that over the weekend they made what appears to be a human version of the stem cells, although further study and confirmation of that preliminary result is needed. Its just a wonderful result; its almost like alchemy, said Douglas Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, who was not involved in the research published Wednesday in the journal Nature. It says one has found a way … Continue reading

Billionaire says he's reversed the aging process

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

A Finnish-Canadian billionaire says scientists have found a way to make him younger. Fashion designer Peter Nygard claims he is getting more stem cell treatment than anyone else is currently receiving, and scientists have found "my markers have shown exactly that I have been actually reversing my aging and getting younger," the BBC reports. The 70-year-old says he has been undergoing stem cell treatment for four years, and that the University of Miami is currently studying him. Nygard lives in the Bahamas, where he is an advocate for stem cell research and wants to open a $50 million stem cell clinic. He says his interest in the subject is about more than just a desire to be younger. "I started stem cells when I wanted to find a cure for my mother who I loved very much and Western medicine was not able to cure her, he tells the Freeport News. "If I had discovered stem cells a year before, I think that she would still be here with me." The Winnipeg Free Press notes that Nygard has released a 10-minute YouTube video ("Bahamas Stem Cell Laws: The Peter Nygard Breakthrough") that shows him "dancing with young women in a … Continue reading

Oklahoma House approves embryonic stem cell ban

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Conducting certain types of embryonic stem cell research in Oklahoma would be a felony punishable by at least a year in prison under a bill that the Oklahoma House overwhelmingly approved on Tuesday. The House voted 73-14 for the Protection of Human Life Act of 2013, despite concerns it sends the wrong message to the nations research community. The bill, which now heads to the Senate, prohibits nontherapeutic research that destroys a fertilized human egg, although the measure specifically exempts embryo transfers connected to in vitro fertilization. For me, and I believe for the majority of Oklahomans, the real question is about life, said Rep. Dan Fisher, R-El Reno, a minister who wrote the bill. When does life begin? I believe it begins at conception. And anything that is done to knowingly end that life is the ending of human life, and we generally call that murder. But opponents say it sends a message that Oklahoma is not open to taking part in groundbreaking research. Not only are we sending a message that we dont want stem cell research, but that if you even try to do stem cell research in this state, youre going to … Continue reading

Oklahoma House passes embryo protection bill

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2014

A bill that would make it a felony to knowingly destroy a human embryo for stem cell research or any other purpose cruised through the state House of Representatives on Tuesday by a vote of 73-14. It now goes to the state Senate. For me, and I believe a majority of Oklahomans, the real question is about life. When does life begin? I believe it begins at conception, said state Rep. Dan Fisher, one of the authors of House Bill 2070. I believe that Oklahoma needs to go down in history and on the record books as saying we are adamantly opposed to the intentional destruction of embryos. State Rep. Doug Cox, a Grove medical doctor, argued against the bill, saying that while he respects the intentions of the bills authors, it goes a little overboard and sends a message to the rest of the world that Oklahoma is closing the door on stem cell research. Cox said its too early to say where stem cell research will lead, but stem cells are being used in research into heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease, Huntingtons disease, Lou Gehrigs disease, muscular dystrophy and autism. Fisher said his bill would … Continue reading

Stem Cell Research – Research!America

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2014

Americans Support Stem Cell Research Support Oppose Research!America supports federal funding for stem cell research on both adult and embryonic cell lines and works to promote and protect stem cell research at the state and federal levels. We work closely with our partners, the Stem Cell Action Coalition and the Coalition for Advancing Medical Research, to advocate on behalf of stem cell research. Former President George W. Bush permitted federal funding for embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) only if the stem cells were obtained from a limited number of previously existing stem cell lines. In 2009, President Barack Obama issued an executive order expanding the opportunities for federally funded ESCR by permitting the use of embryonic stem cells other than those obtained from the previously designated stem cell lines. However, legislation to protect this expansion in research opportunities has never been signed into law, which gives future administrations the discretion to curtail or eliminate federally funded stem cell research. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) is currently sponsoring H.R. 2376, also known as the Stem Cell Research Advancement Act, which would codify the stem cell rules established under President Obamas executive order, preventing future administrations from unilaterally restricting or eliminating federal funding … Continue reading
