New Hope for Stem Cells, Regenerative Medicine Emerges From the Lab
Posted: Published on December 18th, 2013
Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Today, December 17, JoVE, the Journal of Visualized Experiments, has published a novel technique that could resolve a snag in stem cell research for application in regenerative medicinea strategy for reprograming cells in vivo to act like stem cells that forgoes the risk of causing tumors. Dr. Kostas Kostarelos, principal investigator of the Nanomedicine Lab at the University of Manchester, said that he and his colleagues have discovered a safe approach to reprogramming somatic cells (which constitute most of the cells in the body) into induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Research in this field has been embraced as an alternative to the controversial use of embryonic stem cells. We have induced somatic cells within the liver of adult mice to transiently behave as pluripotent stem cells, said Dr. Kostas Kostarelos, the labs principal investigator, This was done by transfer of four specific genes, previously described by the Nobel-prize winning Shinya Yamanaka, without the use of viruses but simply plasmid DNA [a small circular, double-stranded piece of DNA used for manipulating gene expression in a cell]. The technique comes as an alternative to Dr. Shinya Yamanakas reprograming methods, which won him the Nobel … Continue reading

With new multimillion-dollar grants, UCLA scientists take stem …

Sickle cell disease, which affects more than 90,000 individuals in the U.S., is seen primarily in people of sub-Saharan African descent. It is caused by an inherited mutation in the beta-globin gene that transforms normal-shaped red blood cells, which are round and pliable, into rigid, sickle-shaped cells. While normal red blood cells are able to pass easily through the tiniest blood vessels, called capillaries, carrying oxygen to organs like the lungs, liver and kidneys, sickled cells get stuck in the capillaries, depriving the organs of oxygen, which can lead to organ dysfunction and failure. CIRM Disease Team III Awards The purpose of the CIRM Disease Team Therapy Development III initiative is to advance early clinical development of novel therapies derived from or targeting stem cells. These novel therapies may offer unique benefits with well-considered risk to those with diseases or serious injuries. The CIRM grants only support programs that include a clinical study that can be completed and analyzed within a four-year period. UC San Diego Gets $4M Grant For Stem Cell Research
Posted: Published on December 17th, 2013
The state agency that funds stem cell research has given UC San Diego a new $4-million grant. The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine has given the school 62 grants. The institute known as CIRM made its first grants in 2006. Since then, the agency has awarded UC San Diego $142 million for stem cell research. That makes the school the fourth highest recipient of CIRM grants in the state. Dr.Catriona Jamieson, UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center stem cell research program director, said CIRM has funded a lot of cutting-edge science. They also gave us a training grant that has been absolutely vital for being able to train the next generation of physician-scientists, and scientists who want to be able to work with regenerative therapies, Jamieson said. A variety of other local entities have received CIRM grants, including the Salk Institute and San Diego State University. CIRM has awarded San Diego institutions a total of more than $350 million since it began doling out grants seven years ago. Thats nearly one-sixth of the total amount awarded statewide. Stem Cell Research is dedicated to publishing high-quality manuscripts focusing on the biology and applications of stem cell research. Submissions to Stem Cell Research, may cover all aspects of stem cells, including embryonic stem cells, tissue-specific stem cells, cancer stem cells, developmental studies, stem cell genomes, and translational research. Stem Cell Research publishes 6 issues a year. The journal publishes Original articles Short reports Review articles Communications Methods and reagents articles Stem Cell Research collaborates with journals published by Cell Press. Our editorial board is happy to consider submissions reviewed at Cell Stem Cell or other Cell Press journals which are considered to be scientifically sound, but not impactful enough for the readership of Cell Press journals. Authors should include their Cell Press reviews (which will be confirmed by Cell Press) for fast-track consideration. In SCR's fast track system, the SCR office will inform you within 3-5 days if the manuscript warrants further consideration for publication. The editors reserve the right to (a) reject the manuscript, (b) accept the manuscript with no further review, (c) send the manuscript out for further review, (d) require revisions based on the Cell Press or further reviews. Stem cell transplantation outcomes ‘improved with new drug regime’

Current ratings for: Stem cell transplantation outcomes 'improved with new drug regime' Ratings require JavaScript to be enabled. New research suggests that outcomes for patients who have undergone stem cell transplants from unrelated or mismatched donors could be improved with the use of a drug called bortezomib, also known as velcade. This is according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology. Stem cell transplants are treatments carried out in an attempt to cure some cancers affecting the body's bone marrow, such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The treatment involves very high doses of chemotherapy (myeloablation) or whole body radiotherapy to clear a person's bone marrow and immune system of cancerous cells. After this process, the killed cells are replaced with healthy stem cells through a drip that flows into a vein. These stem cells can be from the patient's own body or from a donor - preferably a sibling. According to researchers from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute who conducted the study, stem cells from unrelated or mismatched donors are likely to lead to worse patient outcomes following transplantation. These patients tend to have a higher mortality rate as a result of the treatment … Continue reading
