In the beginning, one cell becomes two, and two become four. Being fruitful, they multiply into a ball of many cells, a shimmering sphere of human potential. Scientists have long dreamed of plucking those naive cells from a young human embryo and coaxing them to perform, in sterile isolation, the everyday miracle they perform in wombs: transforming into all the 200 or so kinds of cells that constitute a human body. Liver cells. Brain cells. Skin, bone, and nerve. The dream is to launch a medical revolution in which ailing organs and tissues might be repairednot with crude mechanical devices like insulin pumps and titanium joints but with living, homegrown replacements. It would be the dawn of a new era of regenerative medicine, one of the holy grails of modern biology. Revolutions, alas, are almost always messy. So when James Thomson, a soft-spoken scientist at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, reported in November 1998 that he had succeeded in removing cells from spare embryos at fertility clinics and establishing the world's first human embryonic stem cell line, he and other scientists got a lot more than they bargained for. It was the kind of discovery that under most circumstances … Continue reading

Embryonic stem cell research falls out of favor as scientists …

Posted: Published on December 4th, 2013

Pro-life groups, which are eager to end research that destroys human embryos, are taking heart that funding decisions in two of the nations most socially liberal states are going their way. Money talks, said Gene Tarne, author of papers for the Charlotte Lozier Institute that find that the bulk of stem cell funding grants in California and Maryland are moving toward ethical research that doesnt use human embryos. The shift looks like a sea change from when state funding strongly favored research from embryonic stem cells over adult stem cells, which are taken from the placenta, umbilical cord and some mature tissues and do not kill human embryos. However, the hunt for cures for diseases, along with federal and private funding for embryonic stem cell research, virtually guarantees that embryonic stem cell research and the moral battles over it are likely to continue for the foreseeable future. The World Stem Cell Summit this week in San Diego promises to share updates on a complete 360 view of the stem-cell field and says no type of research should be excluded. The patient community is not so concerned about the source of the cell it is all about developing effective treatments, said … Continue reading

Researchers Discover Early Step in Blood Stem Cell Development …

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2013

Madison, Wisconsin - University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) researchers have discovered a very early regulatory event that controls the production of blood stem cells and the adult blood system. Video: The dorsal aorta (magenta), a major blood vessel in a mammalian embryo, is the site where the bodys first blood-producing stem cells emerge. Budding out of the endothelial cells that line the inside of the blood vessel, the adult blood stem cells (green) - those same cells that produce a lifetime of blood - are formed. The image was produced by Xin Gao using confocal microscopy. Corrupting the process of stem cell production during development can be lethal at an early stage of an embryos development, but problems with production during adulthood can yield a variety of diseases like leukemia. Researchers unlock a new means of growing intestinal stem cells

Posted: Published on December 1st, 2013

Researchers at MIT and Brigham and Womens Hospital have shown that they can grow unlimited quantities of intestinal stem cells, then stimulate them to develop into nearly pure populations of different types of mature intestinal cells. Using these cells, scientists could develop and test new drugs to treat diseases such as ulcerative colitis. The small intestine, like most other body tissues, has a small store of immature adult stem cells that can differentiate into more mature, specialized cell types. Until now, there has been no good way to grow large numbers of these stem cells, because they only remain immature while in contact with a type of supportive cells called Paneth cells. In a new study appearing in the Dec. 1 online edition of Nature Methods, the researchers found a way to replace Paneth cells with two small molecules that maintain stem cells and promote their proliferation. Stem cells grown in a lab dish containing these molecules can stay immature indefinitely; by adding other molecules, including inhibitors and activators, the researchers can control what types of cells they eventually become. This opens the door to doing all kinds of things, ranging from someday engineering a new gut for patients with … Continue reading
