Congressman Touts Stem-Cell Lab Tour Despite Opposing Stem …

Rep. Mike Coffman is on record opposing embryonic stem-cell research, but that didnt stop the Colorado Republican from touring a stem-cell laboratory at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and tweeting, Happy to get the chance to tour the Stem Cell Research facility. A spokesman forthe school, which is located inCoffmans district, confirmed that the stem-cell facility visited by Coffman November 8 uses stem cells obtained from human embryos. In 2008 and 2010, Coffman supported Colorados failed personhood initiatives, which aimed to define life as beginning at conception, when embryos form, and would have banned not only embryonic stem-cell research but also all abortions and some common forms of birth control. Coffmans November 8 tweet about his tour of the stem-cell facility included a photo of the Congressman viewing laboratory machines. This is a whats wrong with this picture situation, said Karen Middleton, executive director of Pro-Choice Colorado, in an emailoffering a responseto Coffmans tweet. Mike Coffmans support for anti-choice personhood measures and his opposition to stem-cell research dont really fit here. If he is sincere about supporting women and science, he needs to issue a statement about his new policy position, not just stage a photo-op. Coffmans office did … Continue reading

Introduction Stem Cells are unique in that they have the potential to develop into many different cell types in the body, including brain cells, but they also retain the ability to produce more stem cells, a process termed self renewal. There are multiple types of stem cell, such as embryonic stem (ES) cells, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, and adult or somatic stem cells. While various stem cells can share similar properties there are differences as well. For example, ES cells are able to differentiate into any type of cell, whereas adult stem cells are more restricted in their potential. The promise of all stem cells for use in future therapies is exciting, but significant technical hurdles remain that will only be overcome through years of intensive research. The NINDS supports a diverse array of research on almost all stem cells, from studies of the basic biology of stem cells in the developing and adult mammalian brain to studies focusing on nervous system disorders such as ALS or spinal cord injury. For example, investigators are looking at how ES cells can be used to derive dopamine-producing neurons that might alleviate symptoms in patients with Parkinsons disease or how somatic stem … Continue reading

Michigan becomes leader in stem cell research | The Detroit News

Soon after Kate Jones married, she and her husband wanted to start their family. But since the Michigan woman lives with an inherited genetic condition that she didnt want to pass onto her children, Jones who asked that her real name not be revealed used reproductive technologies to conceive a child. She wanted her children to be free of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a nerve disorder that affects muscles and leads to loss of balance. Jones created several embryos with her husband through in vitro fertilization. Tests showed that half of the embryos had the gene linked to her disease. A doctor chose two of the embryos without the genetic mutation and implanted them in Jones, and now she and her husband have a healthy 2-year-old daughter. Left over were five embryos with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease that the couple donated to stem cell researchers at the University of Michigan. With those embryos, U-M created its first disease-specific embryonic stem cell line and submitted it to the federal stem cell registry. Now, scientists in Wisconsin are using it to find better treatments for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. I believe strongly that stem cell research could ultimately cure many terrible diseases that leave people suffering and struggling … Continue reading
