Two patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have received stem cell injections to their spinal cords at the University of Michigan Health System the first two to receive the experimental injections in Michigan as part of a national clinical trial. Both research volunteers have returned home and will receive follow-up monitoring and testing to help U-M researchers assess the safety and any potential effect of the injections. Additional patients with the condition, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, are being evaluated for possible participation in the trial at U-M and Emory University. The Phase II trial is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and funded by Neuralstem, Inc., the Maryland-based company whose stem-cell product the trial is testing. It seeks to study any effect that injected stem cells might have on motor neurons muscle-controlling nerve cells that die in ALS patients, eventually robbing them of the ability to walk, speak and breathe. Eva L. Feldman, M.D., Ph.D., the Russell N. DeJong professor of neurology at the U-M Medical School and director of the A. Alfred … Continue reading

Laser tomography aids 'mass production' of stem cells

Posted: Published on October 9th, 2013

A German government-funded research project is using laser tomography to help scale-up stem cell production for anticipated new therapies. Work on the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)-backed Ultrasensitive Verification and Manipulation of Cells and/or Tissue and their molecular Substances started in July and will receive 4.1million over the course of three years. Central to the project is a technique known as scanning laser optical tomography (SLOT), developed and patented by Laser Zentrum Hannover, while other project partners with optics expertise include the advanced microscopy specialist LaVision BioTec and lens maker Sill Optics. The SLOT technique is used to monitor cell cultures consisting of so-called pluripotent stem cells (hPSC). Once isolated from an embryo, these cells have the ability to turn into virtually any cell type. In the new TOMOSphere project, SLOT will, for the first time, be used to monitor quantitatively the absolute number of cells in cultured, endogenous groups. The results are expected improve understanding of the physiology of hPSC and other stem cells, as well continuous control of their characteristics. Light combination LZH scientists have previously used SLOT to generate optical images similar to those produced by a familiar X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanner. Having already created … Continue reading

Progress in Stem Cell Research based on SLOT

07.10.2013 - (idw) Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. The Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH e.V.) is currently active in a project dealing with the tomographic monitoring of 3-D cell cultures consisting of pluripotent stem cells (hPSC). The Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH e.V.) is currently active in a project dealing with the tomographic monitoring of 3-D cell cultures consisting of pluripotent stem cells (hPSC). The goal of the collaborative research project is, for the first time, to use Scanning Laser Optical Tomography (SLOT) for non-invasive, direct, quantitative compilation of the absolute number of cells in cultured, endogenous cell groups. The results of the project TOMOSphere should bring a better understanding of the physiology of hPSC and other stem cells, as well as a continuous control of their characteristics, making decisive progress in therapeutic concepts possible. For the investigations, SLOT-technology, which was developed and patented at the LZH, was used for the first time for the temporally and spatially resolved observation of native or fixed cells in three-dimensional aggregate structures. Knowledge gained from using this process can be used to classify and later to sort the aggregates, for example concerning heterogeneity of the cell structure, possible cyst formation, or the deposition of extracellular matrixes. … Continue reading
