Stem cell spine injections for MS – trial approved

Researchers from the Tisch MS Research Center of New York say the FDA has granted approval to begin early clinical investigation (phase 1 trial) of autologous neural stem cells in the treatment of MS. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease that attacks the central nervous system (the spinal cord, optic nerves and brain). Common symptoms are numbness of the limbs, but more severe cases can lead to paralysis and blindness. According to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, there are currently between 350,000 to 500,000 people in the US who have been diagnosed with MS, and 200 people are diagnosed with the disease every week. The new regenerative strategy will involve using autologous, mesenchymal stem cell-derived neural progenitor cells (MSC-NPs), which will be harvested from the bone marrow of 20 MS patients who meet the criteria for … Continue reading

Poll: Abortion less likely to be a moral issue than stem cell research

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2013

Published: Aug. 16, 2013 at 9:47 AM WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Americans are more likely to see an abortion as morally wrong, compared to other procedures that involve embryos, such as stem cell research, a poll indicates. Only 23 percent of U.S. adults said they personally do not consider having an abortion to be a moral issue, the survey by the Pew Research Center indicates. But twice as many Americans -- 46 percent -- said they do not consider in vitro fertilization a moral issue, and 36 percent said the same about stem cell research. Forty-nine percent of U.S. adults consider abortion morally wrong while only 12 percent express the same view about in vitro fertilization and 16 percent about embryonic stem cell research. Only 15 percent of the public said having an abortion is morally acceptable while about a third of U.S. adults said they view IVF and stem cell research as morally acceptable, the survey indicated. The poll was conducted March 21-April 8 among 4,006 adults. The margin of error is 2.1 percentage points. Shining stem cells reveals how our skin is maintained

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2013

Aug. 15, 2013 All organs in our body rely on stem cells in order to maintain their function. The skin is our largest organ and forms a shield against the environment. New research results from BRIC, University of Copenhagen and Cambridge University, challenge current stem cell models and explains how the skin is maintained throughout life. The results have just been published in the journal Cell Stem Cell. New knowledge challenge stem cell models The skin consists of many different cell types, including hair cells, fat- and sweat glands. It protects us against microbial and chemical attacks and forms a waterproof barrier that prevents fluid loss. Associate professor Kim Jensen' group from BRIC have through mapping of stem cell's behaviour in the skin found out that the skin uses a unique method to renew itself. Their results challenge the current perception of how our skin is renewed. "Until now, the belief was that the skin's stem cells were organized in a strict hierarchy with a primitive stem cell type at the top of the hierarchy, and that this cell gave rise to all other cell types of the skin. However, our results show that there are differentiated levels of stem … Continue reading

Scientists take step closer to Parkinson's cure

Posted: Published on August 15th, 2013

Dr Bushra Ahmed and a group of research students identified that Parkinson's sufferers' brain cells, or neurons, are dying. This is because the neurons in the brain's movement-control region cannot detoxify the harmful substances produced during metabolic reactions. The process is known as Oxidative Stress. It is the Oxidative Stress which causes Parkinson's sufferers' brain cells to die, and this leads to messages that control movement and balance to be disrupted. The team distinguished the "damaging connection" after creating specific neurons that make dopamine - the chemical messenger or happy hormone - with stem cell technology. Dr Ahmed, from the Department of Life Sciences, said: ''My aim was to identify what specific elements inside the cell are responsible for cell death in this way. What we have found far exceeded expectations in terms of firmly identifying the key factors in the causes of Parkinson's disease. "This research is undoubtedly a great leap forward in the race for a cure, as we can now begin to develop methods of protecting these areas and preventing the damage synonymous with this condition." Using her current research Dr Ahmed hopes to continue on to the next stage and uncover methods of preventing this damaging … Continue reading

Parkinson's cure 'step closer'

Posted: Published on August 15th, 2013

Scientists have said they are "one step closer to a cure" for Parkinson's disease thanks to university stem cell research. A team at the University of Bedfordshire said they are now able to identify the contribution of different elements inside a single brain cell which are responsible for the development of Parkinson's disease. Dr Bushra Ahmed and a group of research students identified that Parkinson's sufferers' brain cells, or neurons, are dying. This is because the neurons in the brain's movement-control region cannot detoxify the harmful substances produced during metabolic reactions. The next step is to take the giant leap into protecting a cell from death which may ultimately lead to discovering a cure. During Dr Ahmed's research it was uncovered that Parkinson's sufferers' neurons are overloaded with excessive everyday toxic by-products. These by-products are harmlessly managed in a healthy individual, but Parkinson's sufferers' neurons are damaged when they meet them. The process is known as Oxidative Stress. It is the Oxidative Stress which causes Parkinson's sufferers' brain cells to die, and this leads to messages that control movement and balance to be disrupted. The team distinguished the "damaging connection" after creating specific neurons that make dopamine - the chemical … Continue reading
