French court backs stem-cell research

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2013

Published: 7:51AM Friday August 02, 2013 Source: Reuters France's top court has approved a law making it easier to conduct research on human embryos and stem cells as long as strict rules are followed to prevent cloning. Predominantly Roman Catholic France has until now had tough curbs on embryonic stem cell research under a 2011 law that only allows it with the explicit approval from the national biomedicine agency. Under a new law approved this month with majority backing from the governing Socialists and their allies, the agency's approval is no longer essential, although strict regulations must be followed to conduct such research in France. The Constitutional Council said it had approved the law, rejecting a last-ditch appeal by conservative lawmakers to get it thrown out. Stem cells are the body's mother cells and can self-renew or multiply while maintaining the ability to transform into any type of cell. Researchers around the world have been studying stem cells from various sources for more than a decade, hoping to capitalise on their ability to transform into a wide variety of other kinds of cell to treat a range of health conditions. Research and Markets: The Stem Cell Research Market: A Comprehensive Guide on Market Conditions for Companies …

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2013

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/32zzzl/stem_cell) has announced the addition of the "Stem Cell Research: Opportunities, Tools & Technologies" report to their offering. To facilitate research resulting from interest in the far-ranging applications of stem cells, a large and growing stem cells research products market has emerged. Large companies selling stem cell research products include Life Technologies, BD Biosciences, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Millipore, although dozens of other suppliers exist as well. Products offered by these companies include: antibodies to stem cell antigens, bead-based stem cell separation systems, stem cell protein purification and analysis tools, tools for DNA and RNA-based characterization of stem cells, stem cell culture and media reagents, stem cell specific growth factors and cytokines, tools for stem cell gene regulation, a range of stem cell services, tools for in vivo and in vitro stem cell tracking, and stem cell lines. Currently, the federal government is an important, although not dominant, source of funding for stem cell research. The reason is that states are spending almost as much as the federal government on stem cell research and are actually spending more than the federal government on human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research. Private sources also contribute a huge … Continue reading

Study: New teeth can be grown from human urine

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2013

Scientists in China have released a new study which shows that new teeth can be "grown" using stem cell research and human urine. According to the study, which was posted in the journal Cell Regeneration on Tuesday, stem cells can help regenerate teeth using a person's own human urine induced pluripotent stem cells. The integration-free human urine induced pluripotent stem cells (ifhU-iPSCs) were combined with cells from mice teeth that are capable of developing into connective tissues, blood, and lymphatic and blood vessels. Within three weeks, scientists say they had tooth-like structures with a success rate up to 30%. WEB EXTRA: For full study click here Scientists say they found "enamel-secreting ameloblasts" in the tooth-like structures, which had physical properties such as stiffer material and hardness found in the regular human tooth. "The tooth-like structure contained dental pulp, dentin, enamel space and enamel organ." However, the "teeth" were not as hard as natural teeth. While the research is not immediately going to lead to new options for dentists, researchers say it could lead to further studies towards "the final dream of total regeneration of human teeth for clinical therapy." Reprogramming patients' cells offers powerful new tool for studying, treating blood diseases

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2013

Public release date: 30-Jul-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: John Ascenzi Ascenzi@email.chop.edu 267-426-6055 Children's Hospital of Philadelphia First produced only in the past decade, human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are capable of developing into many or even all human cell types. In new research, scientists reprogrammed skin cells from patients with rare blood disorders into iPSCs, highlighting the great promise of these cells in advancing understanding of those challenging diseasesand eventually in treating them. "The technology for generating these cells has been moving very quickly," said hematologist Mitchell J. Weiss, M.D., Ph.D., corresponding author of two recent studies led by The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). "These investigations can allow us to better understand at a molecular level how blood cells go wrong in individual patientsand to test and generate innovative treatments for the patients' diseases." Weiss, with Monica Bessler, M.D., Philip Mason, Ph.D., and Deborah L. French, Ph.D., all of CHOP, led a study on iPSCs and Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA) published online June 6 in Blood. Another study by Weiss, French and colleagues in the same journal on April 25 focused on iPSCs in juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML). In DBA, a mutation prevents a patient's … Continue reading

Stem cell pioneer demands funding billions

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2013

The UK lead in stem cell research is being wiped out by a US investment blitz and Britain needs to raise billions of pounds to keep pace, says Sir Chris Evans founding father of the Cambridge medical technology sector. He delivered his call to arms in an exclusive interview given to Rob Symes at Business Weeklys recent Nerve disruptive technology conference in Cambridge. Sir Chris said: Britain has done all the hard work to get stem cells from raw research with Reneuron, the company I started 14 years ago, into humans. Now its all about money. Big Government money must come in right now. The US has gone from a position of stasis with the George Bush clampdown to Obama unleashing investment and now multi institutions across America are doing some fabulous work on the back of billions of dollars of funding. Britain is dealing in tens of millions against Americas billions. We need billions in the UK and if the Government doesnt recognise it and act fast we will have to go outside the UK and bring it back into the country. Sir Chris said the progress the UK had made in scientific terms had been impressive. Stem cells … Continue reading

Tooth created from urine in stem cell lab

Chinese researchers describe how stem cells derived from urine could be used to generate solid organs and tissues, including teeth. Their study is published this week in the open-access journal Cell Regeneration. The researchers hope the technique might one day help provide new, tailor-made teeth for dental patients. Previous stem cell research has shown how cells can be generated from urine. It is also known that cells discarded with urea can become induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) that can then generate many different cell types, including neurons and heart muscle cells. Duanqing Pei and his colleagues from Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, and other Chinese universities have developed a novel chimeric tissue culture system that can coax these iPSCs into tiny structures that resemble teeth. Their system mimics normal tooth development, which results from an interaction between two different cell types: epithelial cells, producing enamel, and mesenchymal … Continue reading
