California Set to Lift Restrictions on Egg Donation
Posted: Published on June 19th, 2013
Human eggs (pictured) used in research could fetch thousands of dollars, if California loosens a law regulating their procurement. Image: Flickr/Kuranosuke Oishi Showcasing more than fifty of the most provocative, original, and significant online essays from 2011, The Best Science Writing Online 2012 will change the way... Read More California is set to pass a bill that would allow payments over and above 'direct expenses' to be made to women who donate eggs for research. The bill promises to increase the supply of eggs to scientists studying reproduction, but will not eliminate restrictions on research supported by the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) in San Francisco, a major funder of stem-cell research in the state. After passing in the California State Assembly on 2 May, the bill is likely to be subject to a vote in the state senate as early as Thursday, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama, which represents fertility clinics and researchers, and pushed for the bill. "We expect this bill to pass and the governor to sign it," says Sean Tipton, the society's public-affairs director. The bill (Assembly Bill 926) would overturn a 2006 California law that prohibits payments for … Continue reading

Stem cell discovery might someday help regrow lost fingers
Posted: Published on June 18th, 2013
The power of regeneration might be right at your fingertips Clumsy manicurists can thank a set of stem cells under the base of the fingernail for erasing their mistakes. Those cells allow not only trimmed fingernails but amputated fingertips to regrow. Doctors might one day use nail stem cells to treat malformed nails or even amputated limbs, according to research by Mayumi Ito of New York University Langone Medical Center. Scientists have long known that children and some adults can regrow the tips of their fingers after amputation. But digits cant regenerate if more than the nail region is amputated. Ito and her colleagues traced the fate of cells on the back feet of mice during nail growth and found a population of stem cells that produces the hard part of the nail and the soft tissue underneath. When the researchers cut off the end of a toe, signals from the regrowing nail stimulated the tissue underneath to form new bone, the authors reported in the journal Nature last week. The digit bones can regenerate only if the amputated stump still has some nail stem cells, the researchers found. But the cells alone are not enough; also crucial is a … Continue reading

Opposing Sides Passionate Over Stem Cell Research Initiative
Posted: Published on June 18th, 2013
February 24, 2006 Nancy Hughson of Kirkwood is one of the 46,000 state residents who've joined Missouri Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative. The group hopes to place a measure on the November ballot to protect such research from interference by state legislators. "I've joined and I look forward to seeing this on the state ballot," said Hughson. "My son had leukemia when he was a little boy, so I am very sensitive to the need for medical research for life-saving cures. "My son benefitted from research that had just resulted in some new, approved approaches for his illness," added Hughson. "I don't think we should allow roadblocks to be put up in front of research. I think we should encourage any research in the battle to defeat life-threatening diseases." Among the groups lining up against the cause of Missouri Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative is Missouri Right to Life. Pam Fichter, a Warson Woods resident and the state president of Missouri Right to Life, said she opposes the initiative petition "because it seeks to place the right to clone and to kill in the state constitution." Fichter said her group is mounting an information campaign against the drive … Continue reading

Life Technologies Expands Range of Stem Cell Reprogramming Solutions
Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013
CARLSBAD, Calif., June 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Life Technologies Corporation (LIFE) today announced the launch of Epi5 Episomal iPSC Reprogramming Vectors, the world's first product to be fully commercialized based on technology that won its developers a Nobel Prize in 2012 for the ability to easily reprogram adult human cells into an early embryonic state. Scientists use induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology to create iPSCs from patient-derived adult somatic cells. The iPSCs can then be differentiated into many cell types, such as neurons and hepatocytes, to be studied in the lab. The ease-of-use and reprogramming efficiency of Epi5 Episomal iPSC Reprogramming Vectors helps accelerate the process for applications in basic research and pre-clinical studies. "You can give rise to iPSCs at a high efficiency rate by using the Epi5Episomal iPSC ReprogrammingKit," said Dr. Keisuke Okita, Lecturer, Center for iPS Cell Research and Application, Kyoto University, who helped developed the Nobel Prize-winning technology with Dr. Shinya Yamanaka."We are delighted to see that Life Technologies is taking the lead to make it available and we hope that many researchers will use it to advance research in areas such as pathology, drug discovery and stem cell biology." While other reprogramming vectors have been … Continue reading

Global Expert in Lung Disease Joins Cedars-Sinai to Lead New Stem Cell Research Program
Posted: Published on June 13th, 2013
Newswise LOS ANGELES (June 11, 2013) Barry R. Stripp, PhD, a recognized expert in lung disease and stem cell research, has been named director of the new Lung Stem Cell Research Program that spans the Womens Guild Lung Institute and the Regenerative Medicine Institute at Cedars-Sinai. Stripp comes to Cedars-Sinai from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., where he has been professor in both the Department of Medicine and in Cell Biology since 2006. At Duke University Medical Center, Stripp was a member of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, led by Paul W. Noble, MD, who is now chair of the Department of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai. The recruitment of Stripp and Noble to Cedars-Sinai bring two leaders in lung disease research whose highly interactive programs have potential to develop new treatments for patients. In May 2013, Stripp received a $5 million Research Leadership Award from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) for his innovative strategies in stem cell technology and regenerative medicine. This award was granted to six world-class scientists and was created to help California universities and research institutions recruit the best stem cell scientists in the world. The recruitment of Stripp to … Continue reading

Stem Cell Walkathon Success
Posted: Published on June 13th, 2013
Thursday, 13 June 2013 00:00 Hadassahs recent 7th Annual Walk-A-Thon for Stem Cell Research was a huge success on. It was a magnificent day filled with sunshine and warmth, as over 500 people came out to support this very important cause. This years walk-a-thon took place on both the North and South Shores. On the North Shore, the walk started and finished at Temple Israel and on the South Shore, at Oceanside Park. Students from the area schools not only helped to raise money for stem cell research, they also came out to walk as well. With the help of the police who blocked off the balloon-lined streets for the walkers, the event was safe and festive. The walk-a-thon has raised over $150,000 so far, and all the participants helped to bring an awareness to the importance of stem cell research here in the U.S., in Israel and worldwide. The Hadassah Hospital continues to be at the forefront of stem cell research and for more than a decade, Hadassah members have been advocates for stem cell research. For the first time this year, the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation had a booth at the walk-a-thon. This foundation is a … Continue reading
