Peggy Noonan and Bill Hemmer Share Thoughts on Vatican-Hosted Conference Rome, April 15, 2013 (Zenit.org) Ann Schneible | 293 hits Adult stem cell research has advanced further than many people realize, according to journalists Peggy Noonan and Bill Hemmer, both panelists at the Second International Vatican Stem Cell Conference. The three-day conference, which concluded Saturday, explored advancements made in the field of adult stem cell research and therapies, and included interventions from experts in the fields of science, medicine, bioethics, politics and journalism. From the beginning, the Catholic Church has condemned the destruction of embryos for the purpose of research, but has been a supporter of research using adult stem cells. Peggy Noonan, columnist for the Wall Street Journal, moderated a panel that focused on the political landscape of stem cell research and funding. It was noted during the panel discussion how the stem cell debate was much more heated in the United States. Explaining the reason for this difference, Noonan told ZENIT, "We are still used to grappling with great political issues from a moral standpoint. It is almost our habit as a nation, for 250 years now. In Europe, this has grown less of a habit. Europe has … Continue reading

Stem cell research and the Francis papacy

Posted: Published on April 16th, 2013

Since the heady days of the elevation of Pope Francis, the barrage of news surrounding the new pope has slowed to a trickle. The early stories continue to be recycled and commentators continue to focus on the first moves of Francis and what they may mean for the future of the Catholic church. The only new news has been the appointment of a Franciscan to oversee the work of male and female religious. The attempts to mine this one appointment for information about where the church is headed have commentators tripping over one another. I should add that at least one exception to this trend has been NCR's own John Allen, who traveled to Argentina to do serious background work on Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, now Pope Francis. At any rate, I put forward my own attempt to fill the void with a look at an article from Religion News Service on a stem cell research conference at the Vatican. I guess no one was shocked that Pope Francis didn't come out in favor of embryonic stem cell research in his first month in office. It is also true that the conference described was clearly planned and organized well before Pope … Continue reading

Vatican adult stem cell conference seeks to promote 'ethical' science

Posted: Published on April 13th, 2013

The Vatican is bringing top scientists together for its second international adult stem cell conference. The organisers say they want to counter misconceptions and prove that the Church is not anti-science, but anti-unethical science. Pro-Life campaigners are strongly opposed to the use of embryonic stem cells to fight disease, but advocate the use of stem cells from adult tissue. The key speaker is last years Nobel Prize Winner for Physiology or Medicine, Dr John Gurdon, for his work in stem cells. I think the prospect of cell replacement has become very prominent and very exciting in recent times because of the possibility of making any kind of cells from an easy accessible cell like skin or blood you can turn them to any kind of cell. The prospect of then transplanting them into patients, he told euronews. I am learning a lot in this meeting about what can be done clinically which I am not really aware of. I am very keen to know to what extent these kind of treatments are proving successful. Professor Silviu Itsecu, the founder and CEO of Mesoblast, the worlds largest regenerative medicine company, said the existing standard of care had reached a certain level. … Continue reading

Dutch and Russian universities set up stem cell research centre

Posted: Published on April 13th, 2013

"At Skoltech we are building a university from the ground up in a unique way, dedicated to translating research to real impact in the commercial world. We have convinced a world leader in the field to move to Moscow to start the Center and we are really excited to have attracted him," said Edward Crawley, President of Skoltech. The Center will also bring to Moscow leading international researchers in the field to conduct courses and training for industry, faculty and researchers. Previously, these individuals would have had no other recourse but to search for expertise outside of the country. The Skoltech Center for Stem Cell Research will focus on using stem cells to address liver diseases, cancer, aging and current incurable diseases by creating transplantable stem cells from induced pluripotent cells and developing specific cellular systems. The Center will also work with many of the 800 start-up companies that are based at the Skolkovo Park in Moscow to create marketable products. Currently there is not a single Russian university in the world's Top 200 universities, and Skoltech is a major project to address this. The creation of the Skolkovo campus at the Skolkovo Park in a partnership with Bostons MIT, … Continue reading

Conference on Adult Stem Cell Research Begins in Vatican City Vatican City, April 11, 2013 (Zenit.org) Junno Arocho Esteves | 489 hits A three day conference on adult stem cell research began today at the Paul VI Hall in Vatican City. The conference was sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Culture, as well as NeoStem, one of the leading developers in the field of cellular therapy. The purpose of the conference is to not only discuss the scientific advancements in adult stem cell therapy, but also to bridge the gap between science and faith. Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi opened the event by greeting the scientists, researchers, scholars, doctors and patients who were in attendance. The research that will be the topic of various discussions, he said, will have a profound impact in peoples lives. You will see that this research leaves a positive trace not only in the lives of patients, but their families as well, he said. Cardinal Ravasi reflected on three terms in his opening address: culture, anthropology, and faith. Regarding culture, the cardinal referred to the debate between adult stem cell versus embryonic stem cell, stating that it is a quintessential problem within our culture which created a … Continue reading

GOP to float ban on some stem cell research

Apr 11, 2013 7:00am 22 hours ago A niche field of stem cell research in the state could be banned undera bill a Republican lawmaker plans to reintroduce, a proposal which could affect research conducted on campus. Rep. AndrJacque, RDe Pere, said he is currently searching for a co-sponsor for the legislation that failed to pass two years ago.Jacquesaid the bill would not restrict all forms of fetal tissue research, only research on aborted fetuses. Researchers will still be able to gather tissue from miscarriages and stillbirths should the parents be willing to donate their babys tissue to research,Jacquesaid. He said the bill would have no bearing on stem cell research conducted in Wisconsin and is intended only to insure the tissue being used for study is attained in an ethical manner. He said scientists should not be able to conduct research on these baby parts. University of Wisconsin spokesperson Terry Devitt said he was concerned by the bill. Devitt said the legislation could prevent university scientists from conducting research on fetal tissue cell lines harvested from as far back as the 1970s. He added it could be difficult for researchers to attain the cells necessary to carry on UWs … Continue reading
