Buck Institute banking on stem cell research

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013

The Buck Institute will soon be the worlds one-stop shop for stem cells, as a pair of research firms plan to rent space at the Novato facility to operate a stem-cell bank. Coriell Institute for Medical Research, out of New Jersey, and Cellular Dynamics International, of Wisconsin, will use a $26 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to operate the banks on approximately 4,500 square feet at the Buck Institute. According to CIRM officials, the bank will house pluripotent stem cells which, like human embryonic stem cells, can potentially develop into any type of cell--blood, skin, or other major organs--but are already mature and dont have to be harvested from embryos. CDI will create the pluripotent stem cell lines and gauge them against samples drawn from both healthy and diseased donors. The Coriell Institute will bank the stem cell lines once they have been induced. Officials say the stem-cell bank could be up before the year is out; the two firms have signed a five-year lease with the Buck Institute. Stem cell research blooms at Yale and in Connecticut

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013

Eight years ago, Dr. Diane Krause was one of only two scientists at the Yale School of Medicine whose work was specifically focused on stem cells. Today, more than 70 Yale faculty members are involved in some form of stem cell research, which since 2007 has been supported at Yale by more than $230 million in state and federal grants and funding foundations. Yale stem cell researchers have published 472 papers exploring a host of medical and scientific questions, from the origins of leukemia to the molecular basis of hair growth. This field has grown more quickly than any of us could have envisioned, said Krause, professor of laboratory medicine, cell biology, and pathology, and since 2006 associate director of the Yale Stem Cell Center. On Wednesday April 3, Krause will join more than 430 registrants and Governor Dannel Malloy in celebrating Connecticuts successful discoveries at the 2013 StemConn scientific symposium at the Omni Hotel in New Haven. Held every other year, the gathering will be the largest since the conference began in 2007 an outgrowth of the establishment in 2005 of the Connecticut Stem Cell Research program by the state legislature. The success of stem cell research at Yale, … Continue reading

Stem cell fate depends on ‘grip’

Posted: Published on March 30th, 2013

Mar. 28, 2013 The field of regenerative medicine holds great promise, propelled by greater understanding of how stem cells differentiate themselves into many of the body's different cell types. But clinical applications in the field have been slow to materialize, partially owing to difficulties in replicating the conditions these cells naturally experience. A team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has generated new insight on how a stem cell's environment influences what type of cell a stem cell will become. They have shown that whether human mesenchymal stem cells turn into fat or bone cells depends partially on how well they can "grip" the material they are growing in. The research was conducted by graduate student Sudhir Khetan and associate professor Jason Burdick, along with professor Christopher Chen, all of the School of Engineering and Applied Science's Department of Bioengineering. Others involved in the study include Murat Guvendiren, Wesley Legant and Daniel Cohen. Their study was published in the journal Nature Materials. Much research has been done on how stem cells grow on two-dimensional substrates, but comparatively little work has been done in three dimensions. Three-dimensional environments, or matrices, for stems cells have mostly been treated as simple scaffolding, … Continue reading

Researchers induce insulin-secreting cells

Posted: Published on March 29th, 2013

Stem cell derived therapies hold great promise for researchers working to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. Stem cell derived therapies hold great promise for researchers working to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and according to a University of WA research teams work, we are one step closer. Type 1 diabetes is characterised by abnormally high levels of sugar glucose in the bloodstream and it develops when the body's immune system sees its own cells as foreign and attacks them. As a result, the islet cells of the pancreas, which normally produce insulin, are destroyed, and in the absence of insulin, glucose cannot enter the cell so it accumulates in the blood. For decades, diabetes research has searched for ways to replace the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas that are destroyed by a patient's own immune system. Many have turned their attention to embryonic stem cells because they can replicate indefinitely. More recently, they have turned their attention to adult stem cells that appear to be precursors to islet cells and embryonic stem cells that produce insulin. Bolstered by a recent grant from Diabetes Australia, UWA Associate Professor Fang-Xu Jiangs research seeks to combat diabetes by driving … Continue reading
