Genea Stem Cells (GSC): 25 new disease specific pluripotent stem cell lines placed on the NIH registry

Posted: Published on January 14th, 2013

SYDNEY, Australia--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Genea Stem Cells Pty Ltd (GSC), a supplier and developer of disease-specific human stem cells, today announced that 25 of its disease specific embryonic pluripotent stem cell lines have been placed on the USA National Institutes of Health (NIH) human stem cell registry. These embryonic stem cell lines are now all available commercially for use in medical research. These cell lines include one disease free pluripotent cell line and 24 others with individual mutations that give rise to several severe diseases such as cancer (breast cancer, Wilms tumor and Von HippelLindau syndrome), Huntingtons disease, muscular dystrophy (including CMT, FSHD and Myotonic) and cystic fibrosis as well as some rarer genetic diseases such as Trisomy 5, macular dystrophy, incontinentia pigmenti, juvenile retinoschisis, alpha thalassemia and autosomal dominant torsion dystonia. All these cell lines are genetically unmodified and have been derived in compliance with international regulatory and ethical guidelines. GSC has the worlds largest private bank of pluripotent human embryonic stem cells with more than 100 individual lines expressing almost 30 different genetic diseases. The Company is also developing multiple differentiated cell lines from these pluripotent lines and currently offer GABAergic neurons and vascular smooth muscle cells. These are … Continue reading

Stem-Cell Research Can Proceed as Court Rejects Appeal

Posted: Published on January 13th, 2013

The U.S. Supreme Court let federal funding continue for human embryonic stem-cell research, turning away an appeal that accused the Obama administration of skirting federal law. The justices today left intact a federal appeals court ruling that said the National Institutes of Health could keep sponsoring medical research using embryonic stem cells. Two researchers who rely on adult stem cells, rather than embryonic ones, James Sherley and Theresa Deisher, sued to challenge the funding. President Barack Obama expanded embryonic stem-cell research when he took office in 2009, lifting restrictions put in place by his predecessor, George W. Bush. The NIH under Bush limited funding to projects that used then-existing lines of stem cells. In lifting the limits, Obama said embryonic stem cells could aid creation of new treatments for diseases and injuries, including Parkinsons, juvenile diabetes and severed spinal cords. Embryonic stem cells, which are derived from days-old human embryos, have the potential to form any of the bodys 200 or so cell types, such as nerve cells or brain cells, and to repair or replace damaged tissue or organs. Adult stem cells, found in living tissue, have a more limited potential to become other cell types. Opponents of embryonic … Continue reading

Living with Multiple Sclerosis: Hope for Stem Cell Therapies | Nan Luke For more information about CIRM-funded MS research, visit our fact sheet: http://www.cirm.ca.gov In her twenties, the left side of Nan Luke's body went numb from the bottom of her foot up to her chin. The diagnosis was multiple sclerosis (MS) and thirty years later she still experiences that numbness and has had bouts of temporary blindness, loss of bladder control, and excruciating fatigue. MS is a disease in which the immune system attacks the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and optical nerves). Although drugs can reduce symptoms, no cure exists. In this video, Nan talks to the CIRM governing board about the challenges of living with MS and her excitement about the promise of stem cell treatments for the disease. Nan is an active patient advocate for MS and is on the board of trustees for the Pacific South Coast chapter of the National MS Society. By: CIRMTV … Continue reading

End to stem cell research challenge doesn't calm funding fears for scientists

Posted: Published on January 12th, 2013

Even as they celebrate clearing a legal hurdle, worries of stem cell research grant money evaporating constantly weigh on scientists like Dr. Ted Dawson, whose projects at Johns Hopkins Hospital have helped inform treatment of neurological diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. A three-year court battle by two researchers to stop stem cell research using human embryos ended Monday when the Supreme Court declined to review the case. Scientists like Dawson say that frees up grant opportunities and are relieved for now. "It takes some of the uncertainty out," Dawson said. "It takes us back to a situation where we're hopefully only limited by our creativity, our talent in doing the science and the resources available." The problem is that more limitations appear likely. Research advocates fear a handful of threats to funding for all types of stem cell research and scientific study in general: the so-called "fiscal cliff," more legal challenges, an eventual new administration in Washington and the possibility of a more competitive peer review process. Altogether, the hazards have tempered researchers' enthusiasm over the high court's non-decision. "It's good for research in general," said Dan Gincel, director of the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund. "It doesn't stop any … Continue reading

Research and Markets: Indian Stem Cell Banking Market: Trends & Opportunities (2012-2017)

Posted: Published on January 12th, 2013

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/5qwk6c/indian_stem_cell) has announced the addition of the "Indian Stem Cell Banking Market: Trends & Opportunities (2012-2017)" report to their offering. Today, stem cell banking is being witnessed as one of the most promising and emerging fields of life sciences. The stem cell banking market is further expected to witness increased significant growth as the market reach increases, regulatory approvals grow for stem cell based products and the resistance to private banks declines. Over 170 different cord blood banking service providers are offering services in different regions of the world. This number is expected to grow significantly in the coming five years. At present, countries such as Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore, etc. have high penetration rates of stem cell banking ranging from 15% to 30%. Regions such as the US, Europe, China and India have low penetration rates of around 5%. Low population density, insufficient awareness and general misconceptions are the leading reasons behind the same. Over six private players are operating in the stem cells market of India, as India is poised to be the largest source for umbilical cord blood in the world. In recent years, the majority of transplants that took place … Continue reading

Supreme Court lets stand policy on embryonic stem-cell research funds

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2013

Washington The Supreme Court on Monday let stand a lower court order allowing government funding of research involving certain embryonic stem-cell lines. The court also scheduled oral arguments for March in two cases over state laws on same-sex marriage. Without comment, the court let stand an August ruling by the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia which dismissed a lawsuit by two scientists who said the funding policy inhibits their chance of getting government grants for their research on adult stem cells, and argued that violates another law. Under a 2009 policy, the government began allowing federal funding of research on human embryos that were created for in vitro fertilization but were no longer needed for that purpose. Under a previous policy, government funding was allowed on stem cells derived from a handful of lines that existed to that point. The two scientists, James Sherley and Theresa Deisher, sought to block the expansion, arguing that it was barred under a 1996 law, known as the Dickey-Wicker amendment, that prohibits use of federal funds for "the creation of a human embryo or embryos for research purposes" or "research in which a human embryo or embryos are destroyed, … Continue reading
