Germany rules against stem cell patents

Posted: Published on November 28th, 2012

Should patents on the products of embryonic stem cell research be allowed? The European Court of Justice said no, but the question remained unanswered in Germany - until now. The German constitution, called the Basic Law, guarantees the freedom of research. It also guarantees every human being the right to life. These two principles come into conflictwhenfacedwith the matter ofhuman stem cell research. At least, they do if you take the view that life begins at conception rather than birth, because research is done using early-stage embryos, or more specifically the stem cells extracted from them. The embryos die during this process - though technology is being developed to prevent this. The German parliament, the Bundestag, has introduced a law that places strict limits on this research. For instance, scientists can only use stem cell lines that were imported before May 1, 2007, a restriction meant to hinder the production of stem cells, and therefore the death of embryos, as a result of demand from Germany. Patent rows Some German scientists want to patent the results and developments they have invented through their stem cell research, and the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) pronounced a verdict on this legal question … Continue reading

Korean team develops new way of generating stem cells

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2012

Seoul (The Korea Herald/ANN) - Korean scientists have discovered a new molecular compound that could increase the efficiency of human adult cell reprogramming to induced pluripotent stem cells. The low-molecule Reprogramming Stimulating Compound 133, or RSC133, adds to the list of non-viral vectors that are crucial to advancing the biotechnology and production of iPS cells. Dr. Cho Yee-sook and Dr. Lee Jung-woon of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology led a team of researchers for this latest discovery that was published in Angewandte Chemie International journal early this month. It said that the compound derivative acts as the "booster of pluripotency," and it "potently improves the reprogramming of human somatic cells into a pluripotent state and aids the growth and maintenance of human pluripotent stem cells." Pluripotent stem cells, like embryonic stem cells, can be turned into any type of cell in the body. The biotechnology of iPS cells has been gaining recognition since Kyoto University professor Shinya Yamanaka discovered that they could be created from mature cells. He won the Nobel Prize in Medicine last month for his research. The reprogramming of adult cells to their immature state has the potential uses for patient-specific cures, such as … Continue reading

Unproven stem cell treatments pose risks

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2012

UNPROVEN stem cell treatments behind an increase in international 'stem cell tourism' are not just proliferating overseas. Similar treatments, without any medical evidence of their effectiveness or safety, are emerging in our own backyard, Australian stem cell experts warn. Professor Megan Munsie and Dr Dominique Martin, from the University of Melbourne, said just because the treatments were offered in Australia and were not illegal did not mean they were safe. Prof Munsie, a stem cell scientist who heads the education, ethics, law & community awareness unit at Stem Cell Australia at the university, said she had received more than 500 patient inquiries over the past year about experimental stem cell therapies offered in Australia and overseas. Most of the inquiries about so-called stem cell treatments offered in Australia related to osteoarthritis, but patients were also querying treatments for spinal cord injury, blindness, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and autism, Prof Munsie said. "It used to be that people with the same conditions would call about overseas treatments, but what I'm seeing now is that more and more people are asking about treatments here," Prof Munsie told AAP. "Because it's happening here and it's not illegal, people think it must … Continue reading

Stem cell treatment allows Brian to take first steps on road to recovery

Posted: Published on November 24th, 2012

By Jimmy Woulfe, Mid-West Correspondent Friday, November 23, 2012 A Limerick quantity surveyor left blind and paralysed after a brutal assault, has taken the first steps from his wheelchair following stem cell treatment in China. Brian Hogan, 35, was working in Nottingham in Jul 2009, when on a night out with friends, he was knocked to the ground without provocation, hitting his head on the pavement. When an ambulance was called, he declined help. Some time later that night his condition deteriorated rapidly. When he came out of a coma, some weeks later, he was left blind and paralysed. On his discharge from hospital in England, Brians parents and siblings gave him round-the-clock care at the family home in Ballykeeffe Estate, in Limerick. His sister Siobhn Hogan said: "We did a lot of research and discovered a clinic in Bejing which offered stem cell infusions. "It is a controversial treatment, but we decided Brian should have the opportunity to see if it could help him." Now after the treatment, Brians family have seen a dramatic improvement in his condition. "We were all teary-eyed last Tuesday when we watched him walk for a few steps after being helped out of the … Continue reading

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) Market Analysis Report 2012-13 – Trends, Metrics and Dynamics

Posted: Published on November 24th, 2012

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) November 23, 2012 Starting with the discovery of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) in 2006, a large and thriving market has grown into existence for the cell type. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) are now sold by 53.4% of U.S. research product companies and 38.7% of research product companies worldwide. Annual growth in the number of iPSC research product sold worldwide is growing at a rate of 14.7% per year. In addition, 22% of all stem cell researchers now report having using iPSCs within a research project. It is clear that iPSCs represent a lucrative product market for research supply companies to pursue - and this report is your guide to claiming maximal profits from this sector. The most distinctive feature of this report is a survey of 293 iPSC researchers (181 U.S. / 112 International). It reveals the wants/needs, technical preferences, and key factors influencing buying decisions among iPSC researchers. Stem cell research and experimentation has been in process for well over five decades. Stem cells have the unique characteristics whereby they are able to divide and replicate repeatedly in addition to their being unspecialized with the ability to differentiate into specialized cell types. The possibilities … Continue reading

EU lawmakers approve abortion critic as top health official

Posted: Published on November 22nd, 2012

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Parliament backed a devout Catholic as EU health commissioner on Wednesday, brushing off critics who fear the Maltese politician could row back on EU policies on stem cell research, abortion and gay rights. Greens, Liberals and Socialists in the European Parliament had said they would vote against Tonio Borg, a former foreign and justice minister in Malta, saying his beliefs could influence EU policy. As commissioner, Borg's remit would include access to healthcare and contraception and the control of sexually transmitted diseases. Borg, who was in Malta on the day of the vote according to an EU Commission official, told EU lawmakers before the vote that his personal views would not affect his role as health commissioner. "This is a victory of reason over intolerance and ideological partisanship," Richard Seeber, a lawmaker in the parliament's center-right EPP group, said in a statement. "Tonio Borg's professional competences and his commitment to European values is decisive for us." The 386-281 vote in parliament is not binding, as the 27 EU member states have final say. Twenty-eight lawmakers abstained. If the European Council, which represents EU member states, decides to fast-track Borg's appointment, he could take office as … Continue reading
