Former Champ Brian Bowles Tests Positive for Elevated Testosterone Levels Following UFC 160
Posted: Published on June 7th, 2013
Former WEC bantamweight champion Brian Bowles tested positive for elevated testosterone levels following his UFC 160 loss to George Roop. Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer informed MMAWeekly.com of the situation on Friday. All fighters on the UFC 160 fight card were tested and all returned negative results except for Bowles. A complaint will be forthcoming, said Kizer. A penalty has not yet been levied. I put his license on temporary suspension pending the next Commission hearing. It is not a finding on the merits; these are still allegations, Kizer told MMAWeekly.com. Bowles (10-3) won the bantamweight title by knocking out then-champion Miguel Torres at WEC 42 in Auguest 2009. He lost the title in his first defense to current UFC champion Dominick Cruz on March 6, 2010. UFC 160 took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 25. More men treated for low testosterone, some without evidence
Posted: Published on June 6th, 2013
The proportion of middle-aged American men being treated for low testosterone more than tripled over the last decade, a new study suggests. Researchers analyzed health insurance claims for more than 10 million men in the United States aged 40 and over and found that by 2011, almost 3 percent were taking so-called androgen replacement therapy. But not all of those men had undergone a blood test to see if they really needed the extra testosterone, according to findings published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The lead researcher said thats concerning because scientists dont know all the possible long-term side effects that could be linked to hormone treatment for men. This is not a risk-free drug, so committing to it for a long time when youre a young man - there could be some risks down the road, we dont know, said Jacques Baillargeon, from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Androgen replacement therapy is recommended for men who make too little testosterone on their own, a condition known as hypogonadism. Thats different from the natural decline in testosterone that happens to all men as they age. But advertising campaigns may be reaching a bigger pool of men - who … Continue reading

More Men Taking Testosterone, But Risks Unclear
Posted: Published on June 6th, 2013
MONDAY, June 3 (HealthDay News) -- Those late-night ads telling aging men that "low T" may be the reason they've lost the spring in their step appear to be reaching their audience. Use of testosterone therapy has increased dramatically over the past decade, according to a new study. But experts worry that too many men may be taking the supplements without understanding the potential risks. Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston pointed out that the development of new drugs, particularly topical gels, also likely played a role in this trend. The study, published in the current issue of JAMA Internal Medicine, involved more than 10 million men aged 40 years and older. The researchers found use of testosterone therapy was three times higher in 2011 than it was in 2001. Over the course of the decade, testosterone therapy increased from 0.81 percent to 2.91 percent. The investigators noted that 2.29 percent of men in their 40s and 3.75 percent of men in their 60s were taking some form of testosterone therapy by 2011. While sales may be booming, the risks involved with supplements of the powerful male hormone remain uncertain. One study presented last month at … Continue reading

Men in Red: Higher Testosterone Levels, Study Finds
Posted: Published on June 4th, 2013
FRIDAY, May 31 (HealthDay News) -- Male athletes who choose to wear the color red in competition have higher levels of the male hormone testosterone than men who pick the color blue, a British study suggests. Men who wear red could be sending an unconscious signal about their competitiveness to their opponents, the researchers suggested in the study, which is to be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Psychological Science. "The research shows that there is something special about the color red in competition, and that it is associated with our underlying biological systems," study leader Daniel Farrelly, a psychological scientist at the University of Sunderland, said in a news release from the Association for Psychological Science. The researchers pointed out their findings may help explain why many high-profile athletes, such as golf great Tiger Woods, wear red clothing. In conducting the study, the researchers told 73 men they would be completing a competitive task and their performance would be posted. The men were asked to choose between a red or blue symbol to represent themselves in the competition. They also answered questionnaires to help determine why they may have chosen one color over the other. The researchers … Continue reading
