Naoufal Lakhssassi, who uses genes to help plants resist diseases and improve their seed composition and content, fits the bill for such an award, receiving it in September 2022 during the SIU board of trustees meeting. An associate scientistin the Department of Plant, Soil and Agricultural Systems, Lakhssassi is a molecular physiologist, geneticist, genomicist, and TILLING expert who discovered and cloned novel disease-resistant genes and seed-trait genes using TILLING technology, along with mutation breeding in soybeans. Sufferers of myalgic encephalomyelitis, or ME, have long felt disregarded by some medical professionals who believed their pain and exhaustion to be a psychological disorder. More recently, patient activism, combined with new data on the underlying biology of the illness, has resulted in changes in treatment guidelines and a renewed focus on ME as a biologically grounded post-viral disease. There is no official record of how many people in Ireland suffer from ME, but international prevalence rates suggest it affects between 10,000 and 19,000 people here. Continue reading
