Multi-Society Guidelines on the Use of Multimodality CV Imaging in Competitive Athletes – The Cardiology Advisor

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2020

A set of guidelines regarding the use of multimodality cardiovascular (CV) imaging in young adult competitive athletes, focusing on the distinction between exercise-induced cardiac remodeling (EICR) and cardiac pathology, was formulated by an expert writing group and published in the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography. This report was endorsed by the American Society of Echocardiography, in conjunction with the Society of CV Computed Tomography (CT) and the Society for CV Magnetic Resonance (CMR). Young competitive athletes with unrecognized CV disease (CVD) who undergo strenuous exercise may be at increased risk for serious adverse events, including sudden cardiac death. Continue reading

Causes and Prevention of Ventricular Remodeling After MI …

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2020

Adverse ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI) is a process of regional and global structural and functional changes in the heart as a consequence of loss of viable myocardium, exuberant inflammatory response, increased wall stress in the border zone and remote myocardium, and neurohormonal activation (Figure 1). Relationship between histopathological features of aspirated thrombi and long-term left ventricular function in patients with ST-segment elevation…

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2020

OBJECTIVE: This study was an investigation of the severity of inflammation (SOI) in aspirated material and thrombus age to examine any association with pre-discharge and long-term left ventricular (LV) function after ST-elevationmyocardial infarction(STEMI). The study group comprised 25 patients with STEMI from whom an occlusive thrombus was aspirated from the infarct-related artery with a 7-F catheter. The SOI in the aspirate was determined according to the mean leukocyte count in 5 high-power magnification fields and graded as mild in the presence of 100 leukocytes per field or significant if there were > 100 leukocytes per field Continue reading
