Strategic partnership with US Walgreens helps lift revenue at Boots as pharmacy profits increase £150million

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2013

By Rupert Steiner PUBLISHED: 16:15 EST, 15 May 2013 | UPDATED: 17:11 EST, 15 May 2013 A host of branded medicines losing their patents caused sales to fall at the firm behind Boots the Chemist, which stocked cheaper generic pills and creams instead. But profits at Alliance Boots, Europes largest pharmacy chain, still managed to grow because it still received the same flat rate per prescription from the Government. The cheaper products meant less cash flowed through its tills, causing sales to fall 2.6 per cent to 22.4billion. Challenging conditions: Chairman Stefano Pessina said: 'We have again delivered a double digit growth in underlying profit after tax.' But unfavourable currency conversions the firm has wholesale operations in 20 countries and a focus on higher margin health and beauty products also played a part. A number of new strategic partnerships including Americas Walgreens taking a 45 per cent stake in Alliance Boots helped boost profit. The tie-up which is likely to result in a formal merger in two years has seen Americas largest pharmacy chain take Boots products. Research and Markets: The Worldwide Guide to Pricing & Reimbursement

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2013

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/jg2cpl/the_worldwide) has announced the addition of the "The Worldwide Guide to Pricing & Reimbursement" report to their offering. Provides insight into pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement systems around the world! The issues of pricing and reimbursement play an important role in determining the likely commercial success of a pharmaceutical product in the marketplace. Following marketing authorisation, the pharmaceutical industry must successfully navigate national regulatory systems to determine the price at which a product can be sold and whether or not it will be eligible for reimbursement by public or private health insurers. So how is pharmaceutical pricing established? There is no simple answer to this question. For other consumer goods, pricing may be as simple as the manufacturer setting a price at which their product can reasonably be sold in a particular market. In other words, a competitive price that is both affordable for the customer and allows the manufacturer to make a profit. For pharmaceutical companies, pricing is often far more complicated. Governments and health insurance providers around the world strive to contain costs while providing effective medicines for their patients. Their efforts to do so have resulted in national pricing policies that include various … Continue reading

Clicks sees tough times persisting for while longer

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

CLICKS Group on Thursday warned in its results for the six months ended February that the headwinds of constrained consumer spending and squeezed margins were likely to persist. "I cant see any reason why retail trading conditions are going to change at all in the remainder of this calendar year," CE David Kneale said. "The economy is stuck in a pretty low gear." Like other retailers, the company is faced with consumers who have become more cautious on spending as a result of rising household debt and escalating cost pressures. Clicks reported diluted headline earning per share of 142.7c from 131.5c in the same period last year. Turnover increased 11.4% to R8.5bn, with selling price inflation of 2 % for the period. Equity analyst Daniel Isaacs of 36One Asset Management said that overall, the groups results were disappointing. "They (grew ) diluted earnings 8.5%, which is not great, especially for the price that the stock is trading at. "The results reflect a weak consumer, low inflation and high-cost growth. They mention that pharmacy costs grew 25%, which is quite significant." Turnover growth of 7% in the Clicks chain was driven by increased promotional activity. "In this environment, to move the … Continue reading
