Taking steps to cure Parkinson #39;s Disease What started 25 years ago as a small benefit walk that drew in a few hundred people and $9000, is now a nationally recognized event that, last year, drew more than a thousand participants and more than $100000. Ken Larson was one of the founders of the Twin Cities Walk for Parkinson #39;s disease. He was diagnosed with the disease in 1983 when he was 43 years old. Parkinson #39;s is a disorder that damages brain cells that produce dopamine, a chemical that affects the body #39;s muscle function. "[It] took him about three years before he would let other people know," says Tammy Selvog, Larson #39;s daughter. "But once he accepted it and figured it all out, then he kind of went gangbusters with what he could do, how he could help with the disease." "He had a choice," says Larson #39;s son, Jeff. "Either I can sit at home and whine and mope, or I can do something and make a difference." Larson #39;s family joined others affected by Parkinson #39;s to organize the first ever Twin Cities Walk for Parkinson #39;s Disease in 1987. It was meant to raise money and support for families dealing with the disorder. Larson died in 2001. But his children and numerous other volunteers keep the tradition alive each year. This is the walk #39;s 25th Anniversary. Once run by the former Parkinson Association of Minnesota, the walk is now hosted by the National Parkinson Foundation and this year, it has a new name: "Moving Day Walk for Parkinson #39;s."
