Eczema is a skin condition is characterized by itchy, red rashes that appear on the skin. It is said to be a group of unrelated diseases that have a similar appearance. There are many factors that trigger eczema although the exact cause still remains unknown. There are many kinds of Eczema; Hand Eczema, Contact Dermatitis (caused by skin reaction when in contact with certain substances), Dyshidrotic Eczema (the blistering type of eczema limited to the fingers, palms and soles of the feet), Nummular Eczema, Statis Dermatitis and Atopic Dermatitis (most severe and chronic type of eczema). Many doctors think that eczema causes are linked to allergic diseases while others think that eczema may be genetic. Allergens are environmental factors that trigger the development of Eczema if a person with genes that are most likely to develop eczema is exposed to it. Some common allergens are house dust, pets, pollens, molds and dandruff. Eczema is also linked to an overactive response by the bodys immune system to an irritant. There different irritants that can amplify the symptoms of eczema. Irritants are unique to each person and may include soaps and detergents, shampoos, dishwashing liquids, bubble baths, disinfectants and contact with juices from some fruits and vegetables. Defects in the skin barriers can also allow moisture out of the skin and bacteria and germs in. Healthy skin retains moisture and protects the body from germs, bacteria and irritants. Defects in the skin may include being dry and irritable, gene variations that alter the skins barrier functions, bacteria such as the Staphylococcus aureus on the skin that creates a film that blocks sweat glands. External factors, like the weather, the food we eat and stressors can also trigger Eczema. Here is a list of 11 symptoms that can tell if one is at risk of Eczema, especially Atopic Dermatitis.

1. Severe itching, especially at night

Eczema is a condition that makes the skin very red and itchy. The itch seems to increase more at night for some people. This is because the bodys production of cortisol is less at night compared to during the day. Cortisol, also known as hydrocortisone, is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal complex. Medicinally, it is used to treat inflammations caused by eczema and rheumatism. It is the bodys natural defence against the itch caused by eczema. It regulates carbohydrate metabolism, maintains blood pressure and is released by the body in response to stress.
