Groundbreaking test may help personalize cancer treatment regimen

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2012

Cancer treatment in B.C. is about to get more personal — and more comfortable — after the announcement Monday of a groundbreaking medical project. Genome B.C. and the B.C. Cancer Foundation have started work to develop a genetic test over the next two years that researchers hope will take the guesswork out of cancer treatment. There are currently two types of treatment for cancer — chemotherapy and stem-cell transportation — said Dr. Aly Karsan, medical director for the Cancer Genetics Lab for the B.C. Cancer Agency. "In order to provide more effective treatment, we must first understand which course of treatment a patient will respond best to," said Karsan. "We can do this with information from the patients' genetic signature of their cancer and this can be identified through their genomic sequence," he said. A developed diagnostic test would help predict whether chemo or stem-cell treatment is the best choice for a patient, therefore helping alleviate a patient from excessive treatments, painful side-effects and wasting valuable time. Karsan is leading one jointly supported research project focusing on applying genomics to the management of a devastating and difficult-to-treat form of leukemia called acute myeloid leukemia (AML), with which around 200 British … Continue reading

ROYAL OAK, MI--(Marketwire -01/04/12)- Dr. Simon is the first veterinarian in Michigan to receive a diploma in Basic Fish Medicine from the University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine. He was taught about fish husbandry and was given hands on experience in dissecting fish for laboratory organ testing. When asked about his experience on the fish farm, Dr. Simon, a veterinarian in Royal Oak, said he found Mr. Miller to be very knowledgeable, gracious, and ready to share his 15 years of fish farming experience unselfishly. 'Dabbling' in hard drugs in middle age linked to increased risk of death

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2012

ScienceDaily (Jan. 27, 2012) — Young adults often experiment with hard drugs, such as cocaine, amphetamines and opiates, and all but about 10 percent stop as they assume adult roles and responsibilities. Those still using hard drugs into their 50s are five times more likely to die earlier than those who do not, according to a new study by University of Alabama at Birmingham researchers published online Jan. 27, 2012, in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.4 percent of Americans ages 50-59 and 7 percent of adults ages 35-49 reported use of a drug other than marijuana sometime in the past year. The study’s lead author, Stefan Kertesz, M.D., associate professor in the UAB Division of Preventive Medicine. and colleagues attempted to discover if lifelong hard-drug use shortens lifespan to better enable primary-care doctors to advise patients who use drugs recreationally. “While government guidelines have not endorsed screening for drugs in primary care, many doctors are challenged when they discover patients continue to dabble with them,” Kertesz says. “In primary-care practice, we often hear from stable patients who report using some cocaine, irregularly, perhaps on weekends. It’s an underappreciated … Continue reading

Are we over-diagnosing autism? The psychiatric debate

Posted: Published on January 28th, 2012

The American Psychiatric Association sent shivers through the mental health community last week when it said it was re-examining its list of disorders and would be proposing a more narrow definition of autism, one that might exclude up to three-quarters of the cases that exhibit milder symptoms. Understandably, parents and caregivers of autistic kids worried that the new definition might shut the door to expensive treatments for children who have been diagnosed with the condition in ever-greater numbers in recent decades. In some ways, the adjustment is editorial. The APA is in the midst of updating the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, the giant standard reference of mental disorders, where all mental illness is assigned universal definitions, for the first time since 1994. Often called the bible of psychiatry, the DSM is cited clinically in courts and by insurance companies to determine the extent of treatment that might be offered and is itself not without controversy. In a mere 50 years it has gone from being a manual of just over 100 pages that defined 103 disorders to its current, fourth edition, that is 886 pages in length and lists 374 known mental disorders. A Burnaby, B.C., boy with autism peers … Continue reading

Cell Society International Hosts its 2nd Annual Clinical Conference in San Diego, CA, to Discuss Clinical Advancements …

Posted: Published on January 28th, 2012

LA JOLLA, Calif., Jan. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Interest in adult stem cell therapies and their clinical applicability in treating and helping patients is growing, while accurate information remains difficult to access.  Cell Society International[1], a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to advancing the clinical applications of adult stem cell therapies worldwide through education and the collaboration of world thought leaders. According to Emerson C. Perin, MD, PhD, Director, Clinical Research for Cardiovascular Medicine and Medical Director, Stem Cell Institute, Texas Heart Institute, Houston, TX and member of the Board of Directors of Cell Society, "We obtained remarkable results from our study in which we injected stem cells derived from the bone marrow of a healthy donor into patients with heart failure. Heart function and exercise capacity improved in some cell-treated patients. Most importantly, cell therapy significantly reduced cardiac adverse events, including death. Three of 15 (20%) control patients died of cardiac causes, whereas only 1 of 45 (2%) cell-treated patients had a cardiac-related death. Despite the small numbers, our findings showed that cell therapy significantly improved cardiac mortality."  The 2nd Annual Clinical Meeting of Cell Society will be held at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort in San Diego, California on February 17 … Continue reading
