Stem Cell Treatment For Blindness Shows Promise In Trials
Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012
Featured Article Academic Journal Main Category: Stem Cell Research Also Included In: Eye Health / Blindness Article Date: 23 Jan 2012 - 12:00 PST email to a friend printer friendly opinions Current Article Ratings: Patient / Public: 4.43 (7 votes) Healthcare Prof: Article Opinions: 1 posts The first published results of trials using cells derived from human embryonic stem cells appear to show they have passed an initial safety hurdle. In The Lancet this week, researchers report that two nearly blind patients, one with Stargardt's macular dystrophy and the other with dry age-related macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness in developed countries), showed measurable improvements in vision that lasted for more than four months after receiving injections of retinal pigment epithelium cells derived from human embryonic stem cells. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells were developed by the US stem cell company Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), and the trials were conducted at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. The report appeared online in The Lancet on Monday 23 January. Both trials are designed as prospective "open label" trials to test the safety and tolerability of sub-retinal transplantation of RPE cells … Continue reading

Medivet's Stem Cell Therapy Featured on Animal Planets Dogs 101 – Video
Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012
26-11-2011 11:13 Stem cells are the body's repair cells. They have the ability to divide and differentiate into many different types of cells based on where they are needed throughout the body. Stem cells can divide and turn into tissues such as skin, fat, muscle, bone, cartilage, and nerve to name a few. With this capability, we can use them as a treatment for joint injuries, ligament and tendon damage, and fractured bones. Using MediVet America's Stem Cell Therapy, we have seen positive clinical improvement in 95% of the arthritic cases performed nationwide. Some owners have even reported seeing a difference in as little as a week! See the original post here: Medivet's Stem Cell Therapy Featured on Animal Planets Dogs 101 - Video … Continue reading

Benitec Biopharma and Medistem Technologies Successfully Combined in Preclinical Stem Cell Therapy for Rheumatoid …
Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA and SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire -02/06/12)- Benitec Biopharma (ASX: BLT.AX - News) and Medistem (Pinksheets: MEDS.PK - News) announced today the successful treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in preclinical models using Benitec Biopharma's patented gene silencing technology applied to stem cell-derived immune system cells called dendritic cells. The studies, which were led by Dr. Wei-Ping Min of the University of Western Ontario, were published in the "Journal of Translational Medicine" on the 31st January 2012(1). Benitec Biopharma's CEO Dr Peter French and Medistem's scientist Dr Rosalia De Nochea Champion were co-authors on the paper. "In 2003, Dr Wei-Ping Min's group, together with Medistem's CEO Dr Thomas Ichim, were the first to apply the technology of RNA Interference to the immune system, by silencing the autoimmune disease-associated gene IL-12p35(2)," said Dr. Peter French. "In the current paper, Dr. Min expanded these studies to a disease-relevant model, and using stem cell-derived dendritic cells was capable of developing promising preclinical data relevant to rheumatoid arthritis." By specifically "silencing" various genes, Benitec Biopharma's ddRNAi technology is capable of modulating stem cells outside of the body, in order to endow them with new desired therapeutic activities. The first clinical study which combined stem cell therapy … Continue reading

Thrasos and Collaborators Publish Nature Medicine Research Article Detailing Potential Treatment Approach for Kidney …
Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012
MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Thrasos today announced that the journal Nature Medicine has published the results of a collaborative research program detailing the role of the bone morphogenic protein (BMP) pathway in the development of kidney disease. This research was led by Dr. Raghu Kalluri, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in collaboration with the Thrasos research team and Dr. Mary Rusckowski, Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Kalluri is a world-recognized expert in understanding of the process of renal fibrosis and the role of BMPs in controlling that process. The research describes the potential for Thrasos’ compounds to specifically target receptors in this pathway, potentially leading to the control of fibrosis and induction of kidney regeneration. BMPs are key regulators of inflammation, fibrosis and apoptosis. High-affinity receptors for specific BMPs are present in kidney epithelial cells and are thought to mediate BMP actions in the kidney. One such receptor is activin-like kinase 3 (Alk3). The comprehensive set of preclinical studies detailed in the Nature Medicine article demonstrate that Alk3 is elevated early in diseased kidneys following injury and also suggest that Alk3-mediated signaling can protect kidneys by inhibiting fibrosis. This research … Continue reading

RED BANK, NJ--(Marketwire -02/07/12)- American CryoStem Corporation (OTCQB: CRYO.OB - News) announced today that it has completed providing stem cell processing services for Personal Cell Sciences Corp., a cutting edge manufacturer of anti-aging skin care products. The study involves researching the regenerative function of a conditioned medium obtained from each participant's adipose (fat tissue) derived mesenchymal stem cells and their ability to promote the production or secretion of collagen, elastin and fibronectin related to skin wound healing. John Arnone, CEO of American CryoStem and Founder of Personal Cell Sciences, commented, "CRYO's patented tissue culture media and its proprietary, aseptic adipose tissue processing methodology allows, as an added benefit for PCS customers to store a clinical grade sample of their own stem cells for future use in regenerative medicine. We are pleased to provide comprehensive Bio-Insurance storage solutions at our clinical facility." The adipose tissue samples were acquired utilizing a mini-liposuction procedure. A total of sixty milliliters (approximately 2 fluid ounces) of adipose tissue was collected in the physician's office and sent to CRYO's laboratory for processing. Once processed, the resulting stromal vascular fraction (SVF) was forwarded to the Personal Cell Sciences laboratory for proprietary formulation for patient specific products. "We … Continue reading
