Treatment, drug alternative courts get $37,000 grant
Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012
The Piedmont Judicial Circuit’s four Alternative or Accountability Courts were awarded a $37,000 grant from the state legislature last week to expand services for mental health and drug offenders in Barrow, Banks and Jackson counties. The courts, which include three Drug Courts and one (mental health) Treatment Court, are less than two years old, but have already drawn state-wide attention for their low cost and effectiveness. “These courts pay for themselves; they are cost effective; they work; and, they make meaningful changes in lives,” said Piedmont Circuit Superior Court Judge Currie Mingledorff, who presides over the four Accountability Courts and is excited about their potential. “These people need treatment, not punishment. We believe in accountability and we give the participants the tools they need to become accountable.” Calling Accountability Courts “a hot button topic” and “maybe the only thing Republicans and Democrats agree on right now,” Mingledorff said state and national attention is being paid to what the courts accomplish in terms of treatment and reduced recidivism. The Piedmont Circuit grant is part of a $350,000 program to expand the Alternative/Accountability Courts system in GA, an effort spearheaded by Gov. Nathan Deal. “Warehousing non-violent offenders who are mentally ill or … Continue reading

Drugs boss 'Roy Cropper' jail term appeal fails
Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012
A DRUGS boss who was called “Roy Cropper” by his criminal associates has failed in an Appeal Court bid to have his jail term reduced. Police found that phone numbers stored under the name of the mild-mannered Coronation Street character in the phones of two drug dealers in fact belonged to car dealer Raymond Frederick Casling, pictured. Casling, 33, of Canterbury Road, Redcar, was jailed for 10-and-a-half years at Teesside Crown Court in June last year, after he was found guilty of two conspiracies to supply class A drugs. He challenged his sentence at London’s Criminal Appeal Court, with his lawyers arguing it was “too long” for his crimes. But his appeal was thrown out by top judges, who said the term was “not excessive” given the large quantity of drugs which must have been involved. Mr Justice Beatson told the court that Casling, a second-hand car salesman, was the organiser of two plots to supply drugs. The first came to light in July 2009, when a car driven by 39-year-old Reginald Breeze was stopped by police in Loftus. Officers found 165 tablets on him and a further 1,400 were found during a search of his home. Casling was arrested … Continue reading

Jail for Loftus high street pharmacy raider
Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012
A PHARMACY raider was caught red-handed outside the ransacked chemist’s with a bag full of drugs within hours of his jail release. Paul Jefferson, 37, was found and searched at the back of the Lloyds Pharmacy on Loftus high street. He had a bottle of aftershave from the store and a bag of prescription medication which was discarded nearby, Teesside Crown Court heard. Hours earlier he had been released after almost two months remanded in custody. At first he denied being responsible for the burglary but had a change of heart and owned up two days later, said prosecutor Rachel Masters. Jefferson, of Catherine Street, Lingdale, admitted burglary and possessing a small amount of amphetamine, a Class B drug. The offences from November 29 last year put him in breach of a suspended sentence imposed two months earlier for another burglary. His record of 106 offences stretched back to 1990. Julian Gaskin, defending, said Jefferson acted as a lookout while others went into the pharmacy. He said Jefferson had been thrown out by his landlord because the police had been to his lodgings so many times. Jefferson ended up hanging around with the wrong crowd and taking drugs again. He … Continue reading

Minehead carer appeals for help for MS best friend 10:00am Saturday 4th February 2012 in A CARER FROM Minehead has launched an appeal in a bid to give his wheelchair-user friend a chance of resuming a normal life by sending him abroad for medical treatment. Paul Booker, 41, was forced to give up a promising career as a DJ after being struck down with Multiple Sclerosis and now his full-time carer and best friend Philip Rattray hopes to raise £15,000 to send him overseas. Philip, 21, said: “It is getting progressively worse, that last bit of freedom he has left is going to come to an end and his life will go down the pan. “He is really, really smart – his brain is certainly in full health, but his body lets him down. It’s heartbreaking. I just want to see my best friend happy again and to help him get back on his feet.” Paul used to play at nightclubs, parties and festivals across the UK and Europe and taught young people to DJ until 2006, when the crippling neurological condition forced him to retire. After leading such an active life, he is now confined to a wheelchair and … Continue reading

OHSU doctors see success with new stroke treatment
Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) - A team of researchers and medical professionals from Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital are seeing remarkable results from a breakthrough procedure designed to help stroke patients. In a nationwide trial involving more than 140 patients, doctors experimented with the new procedure which uses removable stints as of way opening blocked arteries in the brain. The procedure was performed on patients within eight hours of an acute ischemic stroke, caused by a lack of blood flow to the brain often due to a blood clot. Doctors use a catheter to place a small stint in the affected blood vessel, causing blood to again flow to the brain, minimizing brain damage. Doctors said the clot is absorbed by the stint's mesh and both are then removed from the affected artery within five minutes of insertion. The new procedure differs from the more common way to treat clots in the brain, which uses a corkscrew-like device to remove the clot and sometimes requires several attempts. Doctors in the study said 56 percent of patients utilizing the new procedure showed an increased rate of recovery and were less like to die as a result of a stroke. A team of … Continue reading
