Girl Cuts Cancer Mum's Hair In Emotional Clip

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012

A video posted online of a young girl cutting her mother's hair to help her understand the trauma of breast cancer treatment has attracted thousands of viewers. Sara Duncan, 44, was diagnosed last September and wanted to help her six-year-old daughter, Lola, cope with her battle against the disease. In the video, Lola cuts her mother's hair as they laugh and chat - to help the youngster grasp what will happen during chemotherapy. When her hair is reduced to a close crop, Lola gently uses a razor to shave Ms Duncan's head, before Sara finishes the job herself. The film ends with a message asking viewers to donate to cancer charities. It was initially recorded by dad Craig as a family memento, but they decided to post the video on YouTube to raise £100,000 for 10 cancer charities. Ms Duncan told Sky News: "It's turning what could be a disaster and sad thing into 'Let's make it fun.' "You agonise over losing your hair because it's such a big part of a person's appearance." The couple have five other children - Finn, nine, 16-year-old twins Charlie and Rory, Jake, 18, and Oli, 22. Ms Duncan is currently having chemotherapy treatment. … Continue reading

OHSU study points to advances in stroke treatment

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2012

By Peter Korn The Portland Tribune, Feb 3, 2012 ADVERTISEMENTS A new procedure to help people in the crucial first hours after they have suffered strokes may soon be the standard of care, according to an Oregon Health & Science researcher who contributed to a study released Friday. Traditionally, victims of strokes – which involves clots blocking the flow of blood to the brain – are treated with a corkscrew-like device that is twisted into the clot and gently pulled out. The new procedure opens the blocked artery by inserting into the brain a small mesh stent made of platinum and titanium. The stent expands the interior walls of the artery and allows blood to get to the patient’s brain. The clot is captured by the sent and after a few minutes the stent and clot are removed together. A study of the new procedure was presented this morning at a medical conference in New Orleans. The study involved more than 140 stroke patients at 18 medical centers throughout the U.S., 35 of whom were treated at OHSU. The new stent procedure appeared more effective than a traditional device, according to the study. More than half the patients treated with … Continue reading

Many Stroke Victims Still Don't Get Treated Fast Enough: Study

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2012

FRIDAY, Feb. 3 (HealthDay News) -- While a clot-busting medication can often help stop a stroke in its tracks if it's given promptly, a new study finds that a high number of stroke victims continue to fail to get to the emergency room quickly enough to get the drug. An analysis of about 115,000 patients who had strokes between 2005 and 2010 found that almost 44 percent didn't get to the hospital until more than 4.5 hours after the time they were known to first show symptoms. That's a sign of trouble: it's actually up from 39 percent in 2005. Meanwhile, the percentage who got to the hospital within two hours fell from 40 percent in 2005 to 35 percent in 2010, another sign that more patients may be in danger from not getting prompt care. Also, many patients chose to get themselves to the hospital instead of calling an ambulance, "boosting the risk that they won't get there in time to be able to take a clot-busting drug," said study co-author Dr. Mary George, a medical officer with the division for heart disease and stroke prevention at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The main message of … Continue reading
