MASON CITY, IA -Its an opportunity to raise awareness for a disease many of us are still learning about.

Walk MS brings together people of all walks of life for the common goal of curing the nervous system disease.

For organizers, the main goal is to raise the $22,000 for research of a cure, but others say, supporting those affected by MS can make all the difference in finding a cure.

An event like this makes people go What are all those folks in the orange shirts walking for? Oh, its the MS walk, what is MS? It just kind of raises it up to the forefront of discussion on what MS is and lets people understand the symptoms. Also, how people are afflicted with multiple sclerosis, said Joe Malone of Mason City.

The walk which began at North Iowa Community College, spanned two miles and gave an opportunity for participants to meet and greet others affected by the disease.

Since beginning the fundraiser back in 1988, the Walk MS event has earned more than $10 million dollars to help support people living with MS.

For Joe, while the money can be a great asset, he hopes its events like this that can show others there is support out there.

Were doing everything we can to help get over the hump and bring the rates of treatment up so people can continue to work longer and live more involved and active lives while still being afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis. Basically, were here for you, said Malone.
