Alberta mom of twins has successful stem cell transplant

EDMONTON Tammy McLash, an Alberta mother diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, finally had her stem cell transplant.

The Edmonton mother was diagnosed in August, and completedfour rounds of chemotherapy while waiting for a matching stem cell donor.

During that time, she has only been able to see her three-year-old twins, Adam and Madeline, for about 30 minutes a day, at most. Tammy was in isolation for much of December, missing both Christmas and the twins third birthday.

In January, they made the trip to Calgary for herstem cell transplant on Jan. 21.

The long search for a donor seems to have paid off: the transplant was considered successful. Tammy may be able to go home in two months.

In the meantime, her friend is putting a team together to run for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada in Tammys honour.

Tammy and Matt have been amazing and so supportive and were just trying to support everyone so that she can get through it and get back to their kids, saidAmanda Brisebois, but that other people who feel alone know that when you reach out youll have people reach back to you and be part of a community.

Brisebois, who battled two cancers last year, is looking for runners for the team as well as donations.
