DNA testing has gone to the dogs. One of the newest apartment complexes in the metro wants dog owners to pick up after their dogs and they're using DNA testing to make sure they do.

At River Park Place on River Road, the complex says they are a pet-friendly environment. But they also say they are a people-friendly environment. They want it to be clean. So that's why if you're a resident there, and you have a dog, it will have to be DNA tested.

As one of the newest condominium and apartment complexes on the river, River Park Place is trying to set the bar high for luxury living. So to fix the problem, management called Poo Prints of Louisville.

We take DNA swabs of pets on certain properties so it's easier for the property to track people who aren't picking up after their pet, said Joseph Tucker with Poo Prints of Louisville.

With the DNA test kit, every dog owner at the complex will have to swab the jowls of their dog and submit the sample.

Each dog will be identified by a tag.

If feces matching their DNA are found on the property, it's a $200 fine plus a $75 processing fee.

Some residents feel the required test, which will cost them $50, is far from pet friendly, and invasive, but others are happy to see it.

I sit on the balcony every morning and I observe people doing the dog poo thing and a guy that never picks up came out with his little baggie in his hand and he's busy picking up, said resident Dru Kemp.

For management, that's a success and why they're serious about it.
