Local doctor added to stem-cell study
Dr. Julian Robert Gershon Jr., of the Aspen Institute for Regenerative Medicine, will take part in a stem-cell study under the guidance of the Institutional Review Board.
Gershon will conduct a free seminar later this month about the program and the benefits of stem-cell therapy. He is looking for new patients to participate in the study as it relates to osteoarthritis, COPD and diabetes.
In the past, stem cells were difficult and expensive to procure, Gershon said in a statement. With newer techniques and equipment, stem cells can easily be obtained and concentrated by a simple office procedure, he said.
Stem-cell therapy is used for injuries to areas that have a hard time healing on their own (due to the lack of blood supply to the area) and include joints, meniscus tissue (knee), rotator cuff (shoulder) and other tendon injuries. Many times it is used to treat sports injuries, osteoarthritis, COPD and diabetes.
Stem-cell therapy is often used when a patient is trying to avoid surgery and looking for alternative ways to heal the area. Many of our patients have seen amazing results, and we are excited to be participating in another study to advance the use of this therapy, Gershon said.
The board has responsibility for review and approval of research projects for human stem-cell research involving human subjects conducted under University of California-San Diegos institutional assurance.
