In the days of constantly updated information via the internet, fans from across Wyoming were constantly refreshing their various electronic devices as the 3A West Regional wrestling tournament in Mountain View came down to the wire. In the end, Derrick Wolfleys victory over Powells Riley Stringer put the Braves in front for good as Colton Trislers title at heavyweight put the icing on the cake.

The Braves finished with 265.5 team points, inching past Powells 258.0. Lander finished a distant third with 149.0

I thought it was nice that some of these kids got to avenge some losses,said head coach Eddie Clark. Semadeni got to beat the kid from Powell. Derrick got to redeem himself after the Ron Thon and we felt great about Carbon. He gets down to weight and won. Kris Beech won it. Colton is essentially a first-year wrestler and here he is winning the regional.

Nine grapplers advanced to the finals with seven of them winning the regional championship. Five match ups in the finals were head-to-head against Powell with Star Valley winning four of them. The lone loss came at 106 where Jacob Thompson had an injury default to protect a recent injury for the state tournament.

Several wrestlers made moves to different weight classes at regionals. It appears to have paid off. Carbon Kennington (132), Austin Hoopes (145), Kris Beech (160), Marshall Watkins (170), Jordan Semadeni (195), Wolfley (220) and Trisler (285) all won regional titles.

It was a tight battle and the kids rallied around each other in that little cracker-box of a gym at Mountain View and it was a lot of fun,Clark said of the team race. It was fun to have the kids excited about chasing a championship again. Last year we were so beat up we didnt get to do that. They see that it can happen now.

The 3A East was a wild affair with Worland scoring 240.5 points to beat favored Douglas who finished with 230.0 points. Torrington also finished with over 200 team points, setting up what should be a highly intriguing 3A team race this weekend in Casper.

All the teams have had their issues, Clark added. Everyone has holes in their lineup. The team aspect is really fun because it was the first time weve had everybody at every weight. We started the season and had almost everybody on the mat and havent had a full lineup all season long until regionals. We lost some kids but we knew that we started with a lot of depth and thank goodness we did. We finally had a fully roster and the kids did well and we knew we had the points and had the guys that could perform and it was exciting.

The program recaptured this years regional crown after Powell took it last year. In fact, Star Valley has won four of the last six regional championships including three of them in the 4A West ranks. Now with three state runner-up finishes since their last state title in 2007, the program is looking to complete a stellar season with a banner.
