The day started off with a tough loss and ended with one too. In between, Star Valleys wrestlers, looking for the schools first state title since 2007, had a pretty good day.

Jake Thompson lost a controversial 8-7 decision to Landers Kyle Carey in the very first match of the day, relegating the sophomore to a long day of Saturday wrestle-backs. Ian Anderson (126), Carbon Kennington (132), Austin Hoopes (145), Kris Beech (160), Marshall Watkins (170), Jordan Semadeni (195), Derrick Wolfley (220) and Colton Trisler (285), all advanced to the semi-finals with Kennington, Beech, Watkins, Semadeni and Wolfley making the Saturday championship round.

Hoopes lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to Landers Jacob Miller, a rematch of Hoopes regional semi-finals last weekend. It was another call from the referees that drew the ire of the Star Valley faithful in a very tight match. To wrap things up, Trislers battle at heavyweight with Wheatlands Taylor Bush went to double-overtime as the final point was awarded to Bush on a stalling tactic from the Braves junior.

Kennington used a very strong and experienced set of counters to make the finals, while Semadeni and Beech both won by double-digits. Wolfley squeaked out a 3-2 victory to set up a championship with Worlands Hernandez.

Powell used a very strong semi-final push to surge to a 28-point first place advantage after day one. The defending champion Panthers had 181 points to Star Valleys 153. Douglas rounds out the top three with 132.

Kennington made this second straight finals appearance and will go against Powells Andrew Feller. Semadeni will also battle a Powell wrestler in Zach Thompson at 195.

Important wrestle-back matches with Thompson, Gabe Waldron, Cole Bagley, Hoopes, Jacob Shumway, Chris Erickson and Trisler will be vital to a Braves championship on Saturday.
