The Lady Braves jumped out early and pulled away for a 64-32 victory against the Buffalo Lady Bison in the opening round of the Wyoming State 3A basketball championships at the Casper Events Center.

Our backcourt defense was phenomenal this morning, said head coach Rob Erickson. We were able to turn them over and convert for some easy baskets and I was pleased with how well we looked for each other; made the extra pass and got layups out of it.

It was the second early morning blowout win in the past seven days for the Lady Braves who beat Mountain View 64-24 last week.

Im starting to like these morning games, Erickson smiled.

With Buffalo threatening to draw to within single digits early in the second period, Nicoll ripped down an offensive rebound out of the hands of a Bison opponent and put it up and in for two points. She then immediately stole the inbound pass and deftly passed it to Greenwood for another layup.

Greenwood, known as Bruce to the Star Valley faithful then stole the ball and collected another layup. It was part of a 9-0 Star Valley run that deflated a Bison team that will now play an elimination game at Casper College Friday morning.

Shay Schwab connected on a three-pointer early to set the tone and paced the team in the first quarter with eight points as Star Valley led by as many as 21 in the second period. Hailey Greenwood hit 7 of 11 shots and finished with a game-high 19 points. Schwab finished with 11 for the game.

It was a balanced effort as Jessica Woodford scored all eight of her points in the second half and the duo of Lexi Erickson and Abby Nicoll chipped in seven points apiece. It was the 11th straight win for the Lady Braves who have won by an average of 29 points during that stretch.

The Lady Braves will play at 4:30 p.m. at Casper College in the 3A semi-finals. They lost to the Rawlins Lady Outlaws in last years semis before being eliminated in the third place game against Torrington.
