The Star Valley Independent is the only newspaper that delivers news to the varied communities of the area and has been doing so for over 110 years.

Take a look back in time at what made the pages of the Independent 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago during this calendar week of the year. Do you remember any of it? Are you amazed at how quickly time has passed? Or are you still reading about the same issues today?

This weeks walk down memory lane includes a tragic death, a stolen pickup truck and bottled water.

This weeks inset picture is from the first week of April 2008 and a look at the snotel sites used to measure water content. The main picture below is of middle school students delivering food to the Afton food bank. Photos taken by Independent Staff

Bottled water proposed to town councilBottled intermittent spring water may be a reality this summer if the necessary local funding can be raised.

A traffic signal will not be installed at the intersection of Washington and Fourth Ave. That was the message given to the Afton Town Council Monday night in a letter form the Wyoming Highways Department. . . . Therefore because of legal and liability reasons, we must deny your request for a traffic signal here at this time. If you feel the intersection volumes change significantly in the future, we would be happy to conduct another study. . . . The council also discussed the possibility of having a traffic signal that would only operate during the peak times of the day, generally in the mornings and afternoons when school started or is dismissed. During the other times of day, it would function as a caution light.

The second biggest storm of the winter season in Star Valley hit the area early this week, but not in time to affect the snow pack measurements of the Soil Conservation Service and the Forest Service made at the end of March. Precipitation for the seven-day period ending Wednesday measured 1.43 inches at the Hepworth Ranch weather station near Afton. The Snow depth of the storm which hit Monday night and Tuesday was eight inches here. Unofficial forest service reports say that over 20 inches fell at Squaw Flats on Greys River, and more was still falling at the time. There was only a trace of snow when the official measurement was taken a couple of days before in that area. . . . Some farmers had started plowing before the latest storm hit. The moisture was received with much joy by everyone, even though it may not go very far toward bringing the water shed up to normal water content.
