Swiss drug maker Galderma eyes Indian skin care, beauty market

Galderma, a Switzerland-based pharmaceutical company, owned by food and beverage giant Nestle, plans to tap the Rs 30,000-crore skin care and beauty market in India. At present, it sells a little over 30 prescription-based medicines in the dermatology segment. It is now foraying into the anti-ageing injectible and over-the-counter (OTC) segments. It has introduced three to four products in the aesthetic and corrective segment, including its range of Restylane vital skin boosters. It planed at least 12 more products in the segment by 2017, of which about eight would be launched this year, said Madhusudhan H K, head of the company's aesthetic and corrective business in India. "There is a lot of new trends driving this business in India. We want to encash this opportunity by helping the consumer with more options," he said. He added the aesthetic and corrective business will be primarily focused on injectibles, as there is huge space, with demand for dermal fillers and other aesthetic treatments increasing rapidly in the country. The company is also expected to launch an OTC skin care business and has identified five specific brands for launche within the next two years. What: Shares of KYTHERA Biopharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: KYTH) , a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing prescription products targeted at the aesthetic medicine market, jumped by as much as 12% after the company announced it had acquired all rights to ATX-101 outside the United States and Canada. So what: According to KYHTERA's press release, the company has acquired all rights to ATX-101, its submental fat (i.e., unwanted fat under a patient's chin) reduction drug, outside of the U.S. and Canada from its development partner,Bayer (NASDAQOTH: BAYRY) . Under the terms of the agreement, Bayer will receive $33 million in KYTHERA common stock, plus a $51 million note that KYTHERA must pay no later than 2024. Bayer remains eligible to receive long-term sales milestone for ATX-101 as well. KYTHERA also notes that it's on track to file for a new drug application for ATX-101 in the second quarter. Doctor's license suspended following cosmetic surgery deaths

KENNESAW, GA (CBS46) - A metro Atlanta doctor under investigation following two deaths at her Kennesaw med spa has been ordered to stop practicing. CBS46 News began investigating Dr. Nedra Dodds seven months ago and has reported on accusations of misconduct. The State Medical Board suspended Dodds' license Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, saying, "The Board finds that Respondent's continued practice of medicine poses a threat to the public health, safety, and welfare and imperatively requires emergency action and hereby ORDERS that Respondent's license to practice medicine in the state of Georgia be and is hereby SUMMARILY SUSPENDED" An employee at Opulence Aesthetic Medicine in Kennesaw told CBS46 News Monday that Dodds was out sick. The employee also said she was unaware that Dodds' license has been suspended. April Jenkins died over a year ago while undergoing liposuction performed by Dodds. The medical examiner found a perforation in Jenkins' diaphragm, as well as multiple puncture wounds to her liver. Ageless Medicine opens in Vestal

VESTAL A new medical weight loss and skin/aesthetics practice, called Ageless Medicine, recently opened in Vestal. Located at 2220 Vestal Parkway East, the practice offer services such as medically supervised weight loss as well as techniques in skin rejuvenation. It also has a full-service MedSpa and laser center with services available for both women and men, the practice said in a news release. Ageless Medicine also offers trigger-point massage therapy, which is designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. For more chronic pain, patients can be treated using trigger-point injections. Dr. Tali Reeis-Martin founded and owns Ageless Medicine. She is a board-certified physician who completed her medical training at Albany Medical Center. Working in an outpatient setting, she treated chronic and acute obesity-related diseases, according to the news release. Depression was also common, along with low self-esteem and chronic fatigue.
